An Overview of WMS Casino Gaming Software in 2024

Have you heard of WMS Industries? They’re a software provider for both online and offline casinos.

WMS got their start back in 1943. Back then they were known as the Williams Manufacturing Company, which was founded by Harry E. Williams.

Pinball & Arcade Machines

They started out as a pinball machine manufacturer. In fact, William created the “tilt” mechanism that pinball machines use today.

A decade later, in the 70s, they branched out into coin-operated arcade games. They created titles like Paddle Ball (a Pong knockoff), Defender and Robotron: 2084.

In 1987 they changed their name to WMS Industries, Inc – this was the same time they took the company public on the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange).

The following year they acquired Bally/Midway. The Midway acquisition was a natural path, as WMS was already into pinball and arcade machines. Midway is known for creating popular gaming titles like Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, NFL Blitz and Rampage. At one time you could find all of these games in an arcade.

Bally was a less natural acquisition – at least until they got into the gambling industry in 1994 with their first slot machines.

From Pinball to Slot Machines

They closed the pinball side of their business in 1999, while continuing to ramp up the slots/gambling side of things.

At the turn of the century, WMS introduced their Monopoly participation slot series. The participation slot series became a hit, and along with that title WMS also leases or licenses other participation titles like Men in Black, Star Trek and The Wizard of Oz.

Not sure what a participation slot is? Casino City Times says that:

“A participation slot is a slot in which the manufacturer gets a portion of the win from the machine. Wide-area progressives like Megabucks and Wheel of Fortune are participation slots. Sometimes slots based on a hot theme will also be available only on a participation basis as opposed to being offered for outright sale.”

They continued to innovate with their first mobile game in 2011. But it wasn’t until 2012 that WMS started to intensely focus on mobile and online gambling. In doing so they made several partnerships with real money gambling sites, such as Betsson and Unibet, to get their games online.

Acquired for Lots of Money

In 2013 WMS became a subsidiary of Scientific Games for $1.5 billion (shareholders received $26 per share).

Several other brands are underneath the Scientific Games umbrella, too. This includes Shuffle Master, Barcrest, SG, Bally – and as of November 2017 – NYX Gaming Group Limited, which they bought from The Stars Group in a deal valued at $69 million.

Because of all these acquisitions and subsidiaries, players will have TONS of slots to choose from when they play at a WMS-powered casino.

You know a casino offers WMS games if you see the Buffalo Spirit, Gold Fish, or Zeus slot machines.

Several of our writers here at GamblingSites.com enjoy these slots from WMS:

You can find additional titles as they release them by clicking on the link provided.

Compatibility

You can play WMS games from your browser, as they use HTML5 programming – something they started doing in 2013.

This will allow you to play their games from your desktop, laptop, phone and tablet.

Licensing

They don’t say anything about licensing on their website. However, according to LatestCasinoBonuses.com, they have an Alderney license.  Alderney, apparently, has some of the strictest requirements that operators and software providers need to comply with in order to obtain and keep their license.

Conclusion

WMS has an impressive library of slot machines that will keep you entertained for hours.

(Trust us, we would know.)

What’s great about their machines is that if you find one you like, there’s a good chance you can play it online and off, assuming you’re in a jurisdiction where their games are offered.

And, if you are — do it, and thank us later.
