Exploring NFL Dynasties – The Best Ever, Kansas City’s Standing, and Who Comes Next

Defining an NFL dynasty can be tough, but fans know dominance when they see it. Kansas City fell short of completing its three-peat, but the Chiefs still won three Super Bowls in five years, earning dynasty status.

Will the Chiefs return to their winning ways, or will another franchise break through as the next NFL dynasty? Keep reading to learn more about the top dynasties in NFL history and my predictions for which teams have the best chances to become dynasties. 

Defining What an NFL Dynasty Is

So, what is an NFL dynasty defined? We should lay some groundwork before we dive into the rankings of the best dynasties ever. To be clear, the argument is subjective, and many people will have their own opinions of what it entails.

That said, there are some things that we can all agree on. First and foremost, a team has to be successful for multiple years in a row. Having just one strong season is not nearly enough to be declared a dynasty.

I would say that five years is a respectable range, and obviously, the longer, the better.

If we are creating an official NFL dynasty definition, it’s also important that we know how to measure success.

An easy way to know if a team is successful is to look at how many Super Bowls they won during their reign.

Similar to having just one good season, I don’t think one Super Bowl win is enough to earn the title of NFL dynasty. If five successful seasons is our target, then multiple Super Bowl wins should be too.

You could make the argument for multiple appearances, but you’ll have a harder time convincing some of your peers. Making the playoffs consistently is also important because it proves you were able to maintain your dominance over the required span.

Being able to spot a dynasty takes skill, and there’s some incentive to it as well. If you think you know who’s worth backing at sports betting sites, be sure to place your bets and win big.

Ranking the Best NFL Dynasties Ever

Now that we answered the tough question of “What is an NFL dynasty,” it’s time to look at some of the best ever. The top three NFL dynasties in history are the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, and San Francisco 49ers.

No matter how you personally define an NFL dynasty, you must have these three teams at the top of the list.

New England earns the top spot due to winning the most Super Bowls and lasting nearly two decades. Not only did they win six championships, but they also made it to the big game three more times.

Tom Brady and Bill Belichick led the Patriots to an incredible 232-72 (.763) record during that span. Their reign was so long that you can divide it into two parts, and it stands tall against the rest of the pack.

The second-best dynasty belongs to the Pittsburgh Steelers, who won four titles between 1972 and 1979. Their reign wasn’t nearly as long as the Patriots, but it’s certainly good enough for the second spot in the rankings.

Pittsburgh actually had the same winning percentage as New England during their reign (.763). They had a ferocious defense with players like Jack Lambert, Mel Blount, and Mean Joe Green.

Terry Bradshaw and Chuck Noll didn’t always see eye-to-eye, but they sure knew how to win some football games together.

San Francisco’s reign lasted from 1981 to 1994, and they won five Super Bowls along the way. They come in at the third spot in the rankings because they had one losing season (1982, 3-6), and they also didn’t do it all under one coach. Bill Walsh led the team to their first three, while George Seifert manned the ship for the next two.

That said, the gap between San Francisco and Pittsburgh is much smaller than it is from Pittsburgh to New England.

Honorable Mentions and “Almost” Dynasties

New England, Pittsburgh, and San Francisco are arguably the best NFL dynasties ever. That said, there are a few other teams that are just outside the top three.

The Washington Redskins/Commanders had a lot of success under Joe Gibbs. They made it to four Super Bowls between 1982 and 1991, winning three of them.

When it comes to listing off the best NFL dynasties, Washington is a team that you don’t often hear about. However, they definitely meet the NFL dynasty criteria.

The Cowboys had two separate stretches where they had a ton of success. Tom Landry’s squad made it to five Super Bowls but only won two of them between 1970 and 1979.

Five years is usually a good lifespan for a dynasty if they won at least two Super Bowls. Dallas was able to win three in four years, so I would say that four years works in their case.

Two teams that likely aren’t happy with the official NFL dynasty definition are the Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings. Both of these teams made it to four Super Bowls each during their “reigns,” but unfortunately, they weren’t able to win a single one.

Buffalo actually lost four straight Super Bowls behind Jim Kelly and Marv Levy.

Everything was in order for Minnesota and Buffalo to be an official dynasty, but sadly, it doesn’t work out for everyone.

How Kansas City Became the Current NFL Dynasty

Andy Reid joined KC in 2013 and used the first overall pick to select a left tackle. The Chiefs also acquired Alex Smith to be their starting QB. 

Reid and Smith turned around a franchise that had struggled for relevance for over a decade. However, Patrick Mahomes was the missing piece for KC’s title hopes. He led the team to its first Lombardi in 50 years with a 31-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers. 

In his eight seasons as a starter, Mahomes has led the Chiefs to seven division titles, seven AFC Championship games, five Super Bowls, and three Lombardis. KC won nine straight AFC West division titles, falling just short of breaking the Patriots’ record (11). 

After an unprecedented run, Mahomes and the Chiefs suffered a blowout loss in Super Bowl 59. Their issues continued in the 2025 season. KC fell to 6-8 after a 13-16 loss to the Chargers in Week 15. Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL, knocking him out for the remainder of the year and putting his 2026 season at risk. 

KC’s championship window will be open as long as Mahomes is under center. However, if they want to entrench themselves as a true dynasty, the Chiefs need to win another Super Bowl this season.

Who is the Next NFL Dynasty?

The Eagles joined the two-ring club and dethroned the Chiefs in dominant fashion in Super Bowl 59. However, Philadelphia was unable to reach its third Big Game in four years, and its title defense crumbled in the Wild Card round. 

Seattle is the defending champion after winning its second Super Bowl in franchise history. However, with the Seahawks’ first Super Bowl coming more than a decade ago, Sam Darnold and company would need to win two of the next four Lombardis to be a dynasty.  

Other contenders for the next dynasty include:

• Philadelphia Eagles
• New England Patriots
• Chicago Bears
• The team that drafts Arch Manning

The Eagles have been to two of the last four Super Bowls, winning one of them, and have made the playoffs every year of Jalen Hurts’ career as a starter. They also have an aggressive front office and a talented roster. 

New England lost in Super Bowl 60, but second-year QB Drake Maye fell just one vote shy of winning the MVP. If Maye continues to improve as a QB, the Pats could start their next dynasty faster than anyone expected. 

Chicago also has a talented young QB, Caleb Williams, and an excellent young coach, Ben Johnson. The pairing of Williams and Johnson propelled the Bears to the Divisional round last season and has the potential to win multiple Super Bowls. 

Adding the right rookie QB can change a team’s fortune and make a dynasty out of nothing. With a talented QB class headed by Arch Manning in 2027, the next NFL dynasty could be one draft away from announcing itself to the football world.
