Mike Vrabel & Dianna Russini: A Timeline of the Reported Cheating Controversy
This timeline is based on public reporting available through May 7, 2026.
A series of published photos and reports involving New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel and former NFL reporter Dianna Russini has drawn significant public attention across the NFL and sports media worlds. Coverage of their alleged affair has unearthed photos from multiple years and locations, resulting in public statements from both parties, an internal review at The Athletic, and Vrabel’s decision to seek counseling.
Neither Vrabel nor Russini has publicly provided a detailed account of the nature of their relationship. This timeline summarizes what has been publicly reported, what each side has said, and where the matter stands.
Who Are Mike Vrabel & Dianna Russini?
Mike Vrabel is a 14-year NFL veteran who played for the Patriots from 2001-08 as part of one the greatest NFL dynasties ever, and became the Patriots’ 6th head coach in January 2025, replacing Jerod Mayo. He previously coached the Tennessee Titans from 2018-23, leading the team to multiple playoff appearances and winning AP NFL Coach of the Year in 2021. Vrabel is married to Jennifer Vrabel, with whom he has two sons.
Dianna Russini is a longtime NFL reporter and insider who previously spent eight years at ESPN, contributing to programs including SportsCenter, NFL Live, Sunday NFL Countdown, and ESPN Radio. She joined The Athletic in 2023 as a senior NFL insider. Russini resigned from The Athletic in April 2026 after the publication initiated an internal review. She is married to Kevin Goldschmidt, and they have two children.
Mike Vrabel & Dianna Russini Timeline Explained
March 2020: Photos from a New York City Bar
On April 23, 2026, Page Six published photos that it claimed were taken in March 2020 at Tribeca Tavern in New York City. The photos showed Vrabel and Russini together at the bar, with one image that appeared to show them kissing. People, in its reporting of the photos, said that Vrabel appeared to be wearing his wedding ring. Russini married Kevin Goldschmidt later that year.
Because the images were published years after they were taken, this part of the timeline became public only after the April 2026 Arizona resort story had already drawn attention.
June 2021: Reported Boat Rental in Tennessee
In May 2026, also well after the Arizona images were published, TMZ reported that Vrabel and Russini rented a private boat in Putnam County, Tennessee, in June 2021. This was while Vrabel was head coach of the Titans. TMZ published video from the outing as well as images of documents that appeared to show both Vrabel and Russini signing company waivers.
According to TMZ’s reporting, Vrabel and Russini had the boat rented for at least two hours. A source told TMZ that they were allegedly the only people on board during the rental period. People also reported that Russini was about seven months pregnant at the time.
Vrabel or Russini have yet to respond to the boat-rental report as of this update.
January 2024: Reported Casino Photo in Mississippi
TMZ later reported that Vrabel and Russini were photographed at a casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, on January 31, 2024, about two weeks before the Super Bowl and not long after Vrabel was dismissed by the Titans. The Sporting News later reported that witnesses described the two as appearing comfortable together while drinking and speaking with other patrons.
Again, neither Vrabel nor Russini has publicly provided a detailed explanation of the reported casino appearance.
April 2026: Arizona Resort Photos Become Public
The initial breakthrough in this story occurred on April 7, when Page Six published photos of Vrabel and Russini at the Ambiente resort in Sedona, Arizona. The photos showed the two holding hands, hugging, and relaxing by the pool.
Vrabel tried to suppress the resulting affair rumors, telling the New York Post that the photos showed “a completely innocent interaction.” He eventually walked that comment back after more photos were leaked. Russini also disputed the way the photos were being interpreted, saying they did not show the full context of a group of six people spending time together.
The publication of the Arizona photos led to scrutiny of Russini’s work and raised questions about possible conflicts of interest in sports reporting, particularly because she covered the NFL while Vrabel was an NFL head coach.
April 2026: The Athletic Opens a Review
After the Arizona photos were published, The New York Times reported that The Athletic was reviewing Russini’s conduct. People reported that the review concerned the nature of Russini’s relationship with Vrabel and her coverage, and that she was not reporting while the review was ongoing.
The Athletic’s executive editor, Steven Ginsberg, initially defended Russini’s work and said the photos lacked context. Later, according to Front Office Sports, Ginsberg addressed the matter in an all-hands meeting and said the company’s communication could have been clearer.
April 14, 2026: Russini Resigns From The Athletic
Russini resigned from The Athletic on April 14. In her resignation letter, she said she stood behind her reporting and said public commentary about the situation had become disconnected from the facts. She wrote that she was stepping aside before her contract expired; while also saying she did not accept the narrative that had developed around the photos.
Her resignation came less than a week after the Arizona resort photos were published and after The Athletic’s internal review had become public.
April 21–23, 2026: Vrabel Addresses the Situation
Vrabel later addressed the matter publicly, describing it as personal and private. ESPN reported that Vrabel said he had difficult conversations with his family, the Patriots organization, coaches, and players. He said those conversations were “positive and productive” and added that making good decisions “starts with me.”
On April 23, after additional photos were published, Vrabel said he would miss the second and third days of the 2026 NFL Draft to begin counseling. The Patriots subsequently issued a statement supporting Vrabel’s decision to prioritize his family and well-being.
May 6–7, 2026: Boat Report & Video Surface
On May 6, TMZ reported on the 2021 Tennessee boat rental. The following day, the outlet published a video that appeared to show Vrabel and Russini walking on a dock before getting on the boat. People reported that the video showed the two in Putnam County, Tennessee, in June 2021, and summarized TMZ’s reporting that documents appeared to show both signed waivers before the rental.
The Patriots Support Vrabel
Vrabel has not publicly confirmed the nature of his relationship with Russini. He has acknowledged that the situation led to difficult conversations with his family and team, and he said he would seek counseling.
The Patriots have publicly supported Vrabel’s decision to focus on his family and well-being. Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, one of the leading candidates for MVP on the best NFL betting sites, also said the matter was not a distraction for the team and expressed support for Vrabel as head coach.
As of this update, Vrabel remains head coach of the Patriots.
Why the Story Has Drawn Attention
The public interest in the story goes beyond the personal lives of Vrabel and Russini. The controversy has also raised broader questions about sports journalism ethics, including how reporters should manage relationships with sources and how news organizations should handle perceived conflicts of interest.
The key unresolved issue is not simply whether two public figures spent time together, but whether any personal relationship, if one existed, affected reporting, access, sourcing, or editorial judgment. At this point, no public evidence has established that Russini’s published reporting was inaccurate because of her interactions with Vrabel. The Athletic’s review appears to be focused on conduct, context, and potential conflicts, rather than on any single published story.
Separating Facts from Rumors
What is known is that multiple outlets have published or summarized photos and video reports showing Vrabel and Russini together in several settings between 2020 and 2026. It is also known that Russini resigned from The Athletic, Vrabel publicly addressed the matter, and the Patriots supported Vrabel’s decision to seek counseling.
What has not been publicly established is the full nature of Vrabel and Russini’s relationship, whether any professional standards were violated, or whether Russini’s reporting was affected. Until either the people involved or The Athletic’s review provides more detail, those questions remain matters of public scrutiny rather than settled fact.
