Erling Haaland (+600) is the bookmakers’ favorite to win the award. Although the new Manchester City signing has yet to play a single second of Premier League soccer, he is expected to take to the EPL like a duck to water.
Kevin De Bruyne (+700) and Mohamed Salah (+800) complete the bookies’ three-man group of frontrunners. It is worth noting that De Bruyne and Salah have both clinched the award on two occasions across the past five seasons.
Phil Foden (+1600), Cristiano Ronaldo (+1600), and Son Heung-min (+1600) are also in the mix. Having been crowned PFA Young Player of the Year in the previous two seasons, Foden will be eager to claim the top prize this time.
In truth, the odds of winning the 2022-23 EPL Player of the Year award are seriously generous. With countless world-class names to choose from, you can land a tasty profit if you play your cards right.
Now that you’re up to speed on the latest Premier League Player of the Year odds, it’s time to look back at the recent winners of the award.
Recent Premier League Player of the Year Winners
Leeds United’s Norman Hunter won the first POTY award back in 1973-74. Since then, legendary players such as Kevin Keegan, Eric Cantona, Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, and Wayne Rooney have scooped the prize.
Across the 49 editions of the award, only seven players have triumphed twice. On top of that, only three players have secured back-to-back titles. That tells you everything you need to know about the competitiveness of the award.
Let’s take a look at the recent Player of the Year winners.
|RECENT PFA PLAYER OF THE YEAR WINNERS|
|2015-16||Riyad Mahrez||Leicester City|
|2018-19||Virgil van Dijk||Liverpool|
|2019-20||Kevin De Bruyne||Manchester City|
|2020-21||Kevin De Bruyne||Manchester City|
As you can see, Liverpool and Man City players have dominated the POTY award across the previous five seasons. Salah and De Bruyne have claimed two titles apiece, while van Dijk won the award in 2018-19.
In 2015-16, Riyad Mahrez made a mockery of the EPL Player of the Year betting odds. Mahrez’s Leicester City was responsible for one of the biggest longshot wins in the history of sports betting.
Anyway, that’s enough about the past. Are you ready to inspect the top contenders for the 2022-23 Premier League Player of the Year award? Let’s get this show on the road!
2022-23 EPL POTY Favorites – Haaland, De Bruyne, and Salah
If the 2022-23 EPL Player of the Year award odds are correct, Haaland, De Bruyne, and Salah are set to battle it out for the honor. But who will come out on top at the end of the season?
It’s time to take a closer look at the POTY favorites.
Will Haaland Dominate His Debut EPL Campaign?
It is no exaggeration to say that every major European club wanted to sign Haaland. After scoring 85 goals in 88 appearances for Borussia Dortmund, the Norwegian prodigy was one of the most sought-after assets in the game.
In the end, Man City won the race to secure his signature. The 22-year-old is the bookies’ favorite to win the PFA Player of the Year award in his maiden Premier League season.
But there is no denying that Haaland is a special player. The lethal striker has established himself as one of the deadliest finishers on the planet, so he is destined to thrive under Pep Guardiola.
You probably won’t be surprised to learn that Haaland is also favored to win the 2022-23 Golden Boot. Follow the link below to discover my Premier League Golden Boot prediction and pick.
Can De Bruyne Win Three POTY Awards in Four Seasons?
De Bruyne is one of only seven players to have been named POTY on two occasions. More impressively, though, he is one of only three players to have won the award in consecutive seasons.
Thierry Henry claimed back-to-back POTY crowns in 2002-03 and 2003-04 before Cristiano Ronaldo achieved the feat in 2006-07 and 2007-08. More than a decade later, De Bruyne won back-to-back awards in 2019-20 and 2020-21.
In 2019-20, the Belgian playmaker racked up 13 goals and 20 assists in 35 EPL games. Despite registering six goals and 12 assists in 25 games the following season, he still managed to defend his title.
Let’s not forget that De Bruyne notched 15 goals and eight assists on his way to lifting the Premier League trophy with Man City last season. If it weren’t for Salah’s brilliance, De Bruyne might have become the first player in EPL history to win three straight POTY awards.
No player has ever won three Player of the Year awards in four seasons. That said, nobody would be shocked if De Bruyne bucked that trend in 2022-23.
Is Salah Ready to Defend His Player of the Year Crown?
Across the past five seasons, Salah has produced two phenomenal POTY-winning campaigns. In truth, he could have claimed the award in any of the previous five seasons.
The Liverpool legend chalked up a whopping 32 goals and 11 assists in 36 games during the 2017-18 campaign, securing his first Player of the Year award. Last season, he won his second award after bagging 23 goals and 14 assists in 35 games.
You only need to glance at the following table to understand why Salah finds himself toward the top end of the 2022-23 EPL Player of the Year odds.
|MOST EPL GOALS AND ASSISTS SINCE SALAH JOINED LIVERPOOL IN 2017|
|Player||Goals||Assists||Goals and Assists|
As you can see, Salah has been the Premier League’s most prolific player for half a decade. The Egyptian has bagged 118 goals and 46 assists since arriving at Anfield, meaning he averages 32.8 goal involvements per season for Liverpool.
If the 2022-23 EPL titles odds are to be believed, Liverpool are set to push Man City all the way once again. You can bet your bottom dollar that Salah will, as ever, be at the heart of the action.
2022-23 Premier League Player of the Year Sleepers
All the best sports betting sites favor Haaland, De Bruyne, and Salah to win the 2022-23 PFA Player of the Year award. Still, there are plenty of promising outsiders to consider.
Before I share my EPL Player of the Year winner prediction, we need to analyze the potential sleepers.
Harry Kane (+1200)
As crazy as it seems, Kane has never been named Player of the Year. Granted, Tottenham has struggled to compete with the league’s top teams throughout Kane’s era. But the striker’s track record speaks for itself.
The 28-year-old has racked up 183 goals and 47 assists in 282 Premier League games, picking up three Golden Boots along the way. On top of that, he has featured in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year on five occasions.
With Antonio Conte at the helm, Spurs stand a genuine chance of keeping pace with Man City and Liverpool in 2022-23. Could this be the season when Kane finally ends his wait for the POTY crown?
Phil Foden (+1600)
It is easy to forget that Foden is still just 22. After all, the Man City starlet already has 167 first-team appearances under his belt. Oh, and four Premier League winner’s medals to boot!
Last season, Foden was named PFA Young Player of the Year for the second successive campaign. Legends like Ryan Giggs, Steven Gerrard, and Eden Hazard won the YPOTY award before clinching the top prize. Can Foden follow in their footsteps?

Son Heung-min (+1600)
I think Son can count himself pretty unfortunate to have missed out on the Player of the Year award last season. I mean, the Tottenham forward shared the Golden Boot with Salah after scoring 23 non-penalty goals – five more than any other player.
The South Korean was immense for Spurs throughout 2021-22, scoring and creating goals at will. If he can pick up where he left off in the previous campaign, his odds of winning the 2022-23 EPL Player of the Year award will only drop.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (+2000)
Trent Alexander-Arnold was crowned the 2019-20 Young Player of the Year After notching four goals and 13 assists during Liverpool’s title-winning campaign. Since then, the marauding right-back has cemented his status as one of the league’s top performers.
Remarkably, the 23-year-old has registered 12+ assists in three of the previous four EPL seasons. At +2000, the Merseyside icon is an excellent outside bet for the 2022-23 Premier League POTY award.
Jadon Sancho (+2500)
I expect big things from Jadon Sancho in 2022-23.
The winger endured a difficult start to his Manchester United career, bagging three goals and three assists in 29 EPL games last season. But having racked up 50 goals and 64 assists in 135 games for Dortmund, he is destined to shine at Old Trafford.
In fact, Sancho features in my bold predictions for the 2022-23 EPL season. If he lives up to my expectations, he will find himself in the Player of the Year conversation at the end of the campaign.
EPL Player of the Year Winner Prediction for 2022-23
The PFA Player of the Year award has been dominated by Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah in recent seasons. Across the past five campaigns, Virgil van Dijk is the only player to have prevented De Bruyne or Salah from scooping the prize.
Regardless of De Bruyne and Salah’s prowess, a player’s chances of winning three POTY awards in such a short period are extremely slim.
Having claimed four of the previous five Premier League titles, Man City is expected to dominate the 2022-23 campaign. As a result, Haaland is destined to take the league by storm.
I can see Haaland emulating Salah’s debut season for Liverpool. Salah was named the 2017-18 POTY after running a riot throughout his maiden campaign. If the early stages of his career are anything to go by, Haaland is more than capable of replicating Salah’s achievements.
