Prediction Market Leaders Head To White House
President Donald Trump is expected to attend a White House meeting Wednesday, August 19, with executives from the prediction market industry and senior federal regulators.
Kalshi and Polymarket representatives are expected to take part, while Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chair Michael Selig is also set to attend. The meeting is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
Other financial and crypto industry executives are also expected at the gathering.
State & Federal Oversight Fight Intensifies
The growing dispute over who has authority to regulate federally listed event contracts has been a significant challenge for prediction markets as they become more mainstream. The issue reached a boiling point in late July, when New York sued Kalshi, claiming it was operating an illegal, unlicensed gambling business.
Selig and other federal representatives, however, have long argued that the CFTC has exclusive jurisdiction over contracts offered through federally regulated prediction market platforms. Less than two weeks after New York’s lawsuit, the CFTC invoked emergency powers to keep Kalshi operating in New York.
The disagreement has become increasingly important as prediction platforms expand their offerings and draw more scrutiny from regulators accustomed to overseeing gambling at the state level. Minnesota recently attempted to ban Kalshi, while Nevada successfully forced the operator to restrict user access to sports, election, and entertainment markets.
CFTC Meeting Adds To Regulatory Pressure
The White House gathering comes one day before the CFTC Innovation Advisory Committee is scheduled to meet and discuss event contracts, cryptocurrency, artificial intelligence, and other emerging financial products.
That meeting could provide another venue for industry representatives and regulators to address the legal boundaries surrounding prediction markets.
The state-versus-federal question is likely to shape how quickly platforms can expand nationwide, what types of contracts they can offer, and which regulators ultimately have the final say over their operations.
