Why is Ohio State the NCAAF Title Favorite?

The Buckeyes tore through the playoffs last year, beating their four opponents by an average of 17.5 points. Ohio State also won every game by double-digits, including a 34-23 win in the CFP title game over Notre Dame.

Top college football betting sites have the Buckeyes as +240 title favorites.

Despite their showing last year, Ohio State did not start the year at #1. That changed quickly after they defeated #1 Texas to kick off the season. The Buckeyes have been at the top of the AP rankings since.

Ohio State also debuted at #1 in the first CFP rankings of the season.

The Buckeyes’ offense has some room to grow, but their defense has been lights out. Ohio State has allowed 6.9 PPG this season, the fewest in the country. They have also held opponents to an average of 214.8 total YPG, which ranks first in college football.

Top National Championship Contenders

Fellow Big Ten schools #2 Indiana (+550) and #6 Oregon (+950) are ranked with Ohio State in the top five CFP title odds. Two SEC schools, #4 Alabama (+725) and #3 Texas A&M (+950), also made the top five.

The Hoosiers have the best offense in the country, averaging 46.4 PPG. A potential date with the Buckeyes in the Big Ten title game could have massive implications for playoff seeding.

Texas A&M and Alabama could also provide an early CFP preview if they face off in the SEC title game. Both are 5-0 in the conference so far, and they do not play each other in the regular season.

Oregon lost at home to Indiana, but the Ducks have battled back to the top six and are tied for the fourth-best CFP title odds at +950. They are fourth in the conference, though, and would likely be a low seed at best in the 12-team CFP.

Which Sleepers Can Stage an Upset?

The #13 Longhorns had a rocky start to the season, going 3-2 with road losses to Ohio State and Florida. Texas has taken down two ranked teams and can get another signature win in Week 12 against #5 Georgia.

They are on the playoff bubble, so Texas likely needs to win out to secure a spot in the postseason. Arch Manning and company did not live up to the hype early, but they have emerged as a CFP sleeper in recent weeks.

Another dark horse to watch is #8 BYU. The Cougars are the only top-10 team in the AP Top 25 not to be in the top 12 of the latest CFP National Championship odds.

The Cougars are underdogs in Week 11 on the road against Texas Tech. If BYU can pull off the upset, it will have a clear path to a Big 12 title. As a champion, the Cougars would get an automatic bid into the tournament, which is more than can be said for many of the teams ahead of BYU in the latest odds.

2026 College Football National Championship Prediction

Icon of football

The defending champion Buckeyes are my College Football National Championship pick. Ohio State’s defense has led the way to its 8-0 start and allowed its offense to develop as the season has gone on. If the Buckeyes play at this level in the playoffs, there will be no stopping Ohio State (+240) from repeating.
