From betting on the outright winner to knowing the finer details of the competition, this CONCACAF Gold Cup betting guide hits on all the bases.

With a look at the top CONCACAF Gold Cup betting sites online, too, and useful strategy tips for the competition, we’ve got you covered!

Let’s kick things off by looking ahead to the next edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Betting on the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup

If you are going to bet on the 2021 Gold Cup, you should know the key facts. The tournament is scheduled to kick off on Saturday, July 10, with the final taking place on Sunday, August 1.

Due to the current situation, we are still waiting for confirmation of the host nation and cities. As the competition draws closer, all the details will be announced on the CONCACAF Gold Cup official website. At this point, we know that the USA will once again be hosting at least part of the competition.

The group stage draw took place back in September 2020, with 16 teams – including guest nation Qatar – involved in the draw.

Based on the CONCACAF rankings, the teams were split into four pots. The higher ranked nations were automatically seeded, with the lower-ranked teams separated across the other three pots.

The table below shows the breakdown of the 2021 Gold Cup pots and as you would expect, the main favorites you should know about when betting on the winner are in the first pot.

Pot 1 Pot 2 Pot 3 Pot 4
Mexico Jamaica Martinique Playoff winner
United States Canada Curaçao Playoff winner
Costa Rica Panama Suriname Playoff winner
Honduras El Salvador Grenada Qatar

Mexico and the United States are always dangerous and 2021 won’t be an exception. You should be careful with the decent Costa Rica squad as well, and the nation certainly can go all the way.

The last of the qualifying games are due to take place in the week leading up to the tournament, so we will know the final 2021 Gold Cup line-up then. This will obviously help us to make more accurate Gold Cup predictions and betting picks.

It’s unlikely that the last qualified teams will be able to fight for the title or even a place in the playoffs, but they could open the door to some interesting Gold Cup wagering opportunities in the group stages.

We also expect more Gold Cup 2021 odds and betting markets to be available when we know the full list of contestants. Once they are up, you can expect an update of our Gold Cup predictions and more content on our soccer blog.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at how the group stage draw for the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup unfolded.

General Betting Advice for the CONCACAF Gold Cup

Here are some general Gold Cup tips that should help you when it comes to gambling on the tournament.

Check the Recent Form Guide

Before the Gold Cup gets underway, teams usually play a number of warm-up matches leading up to the tournament. These may only be friendly games, but you can generally gauge what kind of form a team is in by looking at their recent results.

With coaches often using these opportunities to experiment with their squads, it is important not to read too much into pre-tournament friendlies. However, you can definitely learn a lot about teams from watching these games.

If one of the bookies’ favorites has lost a couple of matches directly before the Gold Cup, you may consider avoiding them in any bets until you see how they fare in the competition.

On the other hand, if a less-favored side is heading into the tournament on the back of some positive results, they will enter the group stage full of confidence.

At the end of the day, it pays to check the form of each team before betting on the Gold Cup.

Consider the FIFA World Rankings

Many believe that the FIFA World Rankings count for very little. To a certain extent, that viewpoint is true. But when it comes to Gold Cup betting, the rankings are certainly worth considering.

The World Cup features the best countries from every confederation, meaning each group is made up of relatively evenly-matched teams. In the Gold Gup, the gulf between the seeded nations and the other sides in the groups is often vast.

As an example, let’s take a look at Group A from the 2019 Gold Cup.

Team FIFA World Ranking
Mexico 18
Canada 78
Cuba 175
Martinique N/A

When the 2019 Gold Cup got underway, FIFA ranked Mexico as the eighteenth best side in the world. Canada (78) and Cuba (175) were both miles behind in the rankings, while Martinique wasn’t even recognized by FIFA back then.

Unsurprisingly, Mexico went on to crush the other three teams in Group A – beating Cuba 7-0, Canada 3-1, and Martinique 3-2.

Mexico crushed Group A in 2019 and you could easily predict that based on the FIFA rankings.

If you’re unfamiliar with soccer and want to wager on the CONCACAF Gold Cup, checking out the FIFA World Rankings can give you an idea of the level of each team in the tournament.

Keep Your Options Open

You can bet on hundreds of different soccer markets nowadays. Wagering on the outright tournament winner is one of the most obvious Gold Cup gambling options, while betting on the results of individual games is also hugely popular.

However, don’t be afraid to assess your options and delve deeper into the sportsbooks’ markets.

Sure, if you follow our guide to CONCACAF Gold Cup betting, you will set yourself up for making some money. But doing your own research could prove to be extremely beneficial – and lucrative.

As well as betting on the number of goals in a game, you can also wager on yellow and red cards, corners, goalscorers, winning margins, shots – you name it.

The opportunities truly are endless!

Tips for Betting on the Gold Cup Outright Winner

On the whole, wagering on the winner of the CONCACAF Gold Cup is no different from betting on the winner of any other major international soccer tournament.

Just like the World Cup, European Championship, and Copa America, the Gold Cup follows the same format. The group stage is followed by a series of knockout phases before the two remaining teams face off in the final.

However, each major competition has its own specific features, and the Gold Cup is no exception.

Team Titles Years
Mexico 8 1993, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2009, 2011, 2015, 2019
United States 6 1991, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2013, 2017
Canada 1 2000

Following 15 editions of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, there have only been three winners of the tournament – Mexico, the USA, and Canada.

Mexico holds the record for the most wins (8), although the USA isn’t too far behind (6). Canada’s sole Gold Cup triumph came back in 2000, but no other nation has been able to win the competition in its 30-year history.

By contrast, eight different teams have won the World Cup. There have also been multiple winners of the European Championship, Copa America, Africa Cup of Nations, and other continental tournaments.

So, when it comes to making your prediction for the outright winner of the Gold Cup, there are only really a couple of frontrunners.

Mexico has dominated the tournament and won the 2019 edition as well.

Choosing Between the Favorites

We all know that Mexico and the United States are going to be at the very top of the bookies’ favorites list for every Gold Cup. But if we want to bet on the outright winner of the competition, how do we choose between the frontrunners?

Well, there are a number of different factors to consider.

  • Squad depth
  • Injuries to key performers
  • Impact players
  • Team morale
  • Coaching staff

The depth of a country’s squad obviously counts for a lot when it comes to winning the Gold Cup. With games coming thick and fast, coaches invariably have to rotate their starting line-up in order to keep players fresh.

Naturally, the teams with the deepest squads tend to go further in the tournament, as they have bigger pools of top-quality players.

You should also keep a close eye on injury news leading up to the CONCACAF Gold Cup. If a country is heading into the competition without one of its star players, the likelihood of the team succeeding will be smaller.

Team morale is worth considering, too. There always seems to be unrest within one or two camps at any major soccer tournament, and this definitely applies to the Gold Cup.

The team spirit of the Canadian squad in 2000 was crucial for the country’s only title to date.

If there is a public disagreement between players or coaches of a particular country, the team’s performances will probably be negatively impacted as a result.

On the flip side, if everything is going smoothly behind the scenes, the team’s on-pitch displays will likely reflect that.

Betting on Different Stages of the CONCACAF Gold Cup

The type of CONCACAF Gold Cup bets you place can often depend on the stage of the tournament.

With that in mind, there are different strategies to consider as the competition progresses.

Betting on Gold Cup Group Stage Games

As we touched on earlier, the Gold Cup group stage sees CONCACAF’s strongest teams come up against some of the confederation’s lowest-ranked nations.

More often than not, the seeded sides cruise through the group stage without any problems, generally picking up a number of high-scoring wins in the process.

The USA’s 2019 Gold Cup group stage campaign is a perfect example of this.

Opponent Scoreline
Guyana 4-0
Trinidad and Tobago 6-0
Panama 1-0

The USMNT scored 11 goals on its way to finishing with maximum points in Group D at the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Meanwhile, the team managed to reach the knockout stages without conceding a single goal.

Team US destroyed Trinidad and Tobago in 2019.

Not only does the Gold Cup group stage provide bettors with an opportunity to place some pretty assured wagers, but it also dishes up plenty of high-scoring games. This where the over/under goals market comes in handy.

It is also worth noting that teams can drop points in group games and still qualify for the next round. With three matches to secure qualification, a draw or loss wouldn’t necessarily mean the end of a country’s Gold Cup campaign.

Ultimately, this means that you need to follow the tournament closely and stay up to date with the latest group standings. If a team has already secured first place in its group with one game still to play, the manager may choose to rest some of his key players to prepare for the quarter-finals.

Betting on the Gold Cup Knockouts

After the Gold Cup group stage, every single game counts. In order to win the tournament, countries must navigate their way through the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final by claiming three straight victories.

Needless to say, you must adjust your betting strategy accordingly.

With the top two teams from each group advancing to the knockout phase, there are always going to be one or two surprise inclusions in the quarter-finals. Broadly speaking, the seeded nations progress to the last eight. But there are nearly always a couple of unexpected quarter-finalists.

Make sure you keep an eye out for the lower-ranked teams that make it through to the quarter-finals, as they aren’t likely to advance any further in the Gold Cup.

As the tournament progresses, the number of goals is also bound to decrease. The competition heightens dramatically in the knockout stages, meaning you tend to see less high-scoring games and more close encounters.

Year Goals Games Goals Per Game Average
2017 13 7 1.86
2019 15 7 2.14

As you can see from the table above, the seven knockout games at the 2017 Gold Cup produced a total of just 13 goals, while the 2019 edition of the tournament dished up 15 goals between the quarter-finals and final.

These averages suggest that going with the under 2.5 goals market after the group stage would be a sensible strategy.

There are other interesting facts and records that can help when you bet on the Gold Cup and we cover them later in this guide. Before we get there, let’s explore the format of the tournament.

CONCACAF Gold Cup Format

Every two years, the 41 member teams in the CONCACAF begin working toward the Gold Cup final stages by playing in a pre-qualifying round involving all teams.

The best 16 teams that come out of this initial round enter the first official stage of the Gold Cup, the qualifying stage that directly precedes the quarterfinals.

These 16 teams will be placed into four groups of four, and each country’s team will play once against the other members of their group of four.

The two best teams of each group will proceed to the quarterfinals when four games will be played. The chart below shows the quarterfinal process, whereby the winners of the four groups face the runners up, to confirm their dominance or to be bested and thus knocked out of the running.

The winner of each of those quarterfinal matches will move on to the semi-finals, with the victors of the semifinal matches meeting in the final. There will also be a playoff between the 3rd and 4th ranked teams for third place in the final standings.

Rankings by Total Gold Cup Matches Won

Here are how the top 10 teams stack up against each other by total matches played and won within the Gold Cup format.

Ranking Nation Matches won Matches played

6 El Salvador 20 67
7 Guatemala 19 69
8 Haiti 18 58
9 Jamaica 18 54
10 Trinidad and Tobago 17 62

The results are another testimony to the dominance of the two biggest sides in CONCACAF.

Historic Performance of Guest Nations

Occasionally a “guest nation” is invited to participate in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, just as guest teams play in the Copa America. Here is how they have done at the Gold Cup. Some have made a run at the title, occasionally ending up in second place!

Country # Appearances Results
Brazil 3 Two 2nd places, one 3rd place
Colombia 3 One 2nd place, one quarterfinal, one semifinal
S. Korea 2 One 4th, one no placement
Peru 1 One semifinal
Ecuador 1 One no placement
S. Africa 1 One quarterfinal

Guest nations are invited to add excitement and viewership to the Cup. However, there is the risk that South Korea or South Africa or even Qatar will take the title!

The Era Before the CONCACAF Gold Cup

The Gold Cup was established in 1991 (thirty years after the birth of CONCACAF). Before the Gold Cup name made its debut, the competition was known as the CONCACAF Championship, and was the largest and most comprehensive tournament in North, Central, and certain portions of South America.

Year Winner
1963 Costa Rica
1965 Mexico
1967 Guatemala
1969 Costa Rica
1971 Mexico
1973 Haiti
1977 Mexico
1981 Honduras
1985 Canada
1989 Costa Rica

However, before CONCACAF was born in 1961 and the CONCACAF tournament established itself in 1963 as the premier tournament throughout the Americas, the region was home to other, smaller competitions.

The NAFC Championship and the North American Nations Cup were tournaments involving Mexico, the United States, and Cuba. The NAFC tournament was held in 1947 in Cuba, in 1949 in Mexico, and then took a 41-year hiatus before two more editions of the tournament (now called the Nations Cup) were held in 1990 and 1991, in Canada and the US respectively.

The Nations Cup returned briefly in the 1990s.

The CCCF Championship was held between 1941 and 1961, before giving way to the CONCACAF. The CCCF stands for the Confederation Centroamericana y del Caribe de Futbol, and included Suriname, Aruba, the Netherlands Antilles, and Costa Rica, in addition to other teams that are now included in the CONCACAF.

Rebranding to CONCACAF Gold Cup

As noted, the CONCACAF Championship changed its name to the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 1991. The goal was the same: to determine the best of the men’s soccer teams in the confederation every two years.

Here are some of the memorable moments in GOLD Cup’s history so far.

2000 Canada Wins Gold Cup, shocking two continents
2002 Two Cuban players defect to the US during the tournament
2016 Gold Cup expands from 12 teams to 16
2019 Qualification system no longer separated into Caribbean zone and Central American zone

All editions of the CONCACAF Gold Cup were held in the USA, but the country did share hosting duties other countries on several occasions as follows.

Year Co-host
1993 Mexico
2003 Mexico
2015 Canada
2019 Costa Rica, Jamaica

The trend is to continue giving other nations the chance to host the competition in the near future and that’s something to consider when you bet on the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The home advantage is always a huge factor in soccer gambling.
