It’s been a crazy year to be a human, right? From the COVID pandemic to the cost-of-living crisis, it seems most of us are learning to expect the unexpected. But for some extraordinary humans, their actions have left stronger stains on the fabric of time.

The names of some of these individuals can be found among the most popular Time Person of the Year 2022 predictions.

From Zelenskyy to last year’s winner, Elon Musk, someone must pick up the award when it is announced in December. You can have your say, of course, but the decision ultimately rests with Time magazine editors.

Indeed, this is not America’s Funniest Home Videos. And with the tangible suffering of many of Ukraine’s people as a result of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, it would be more than a little crass to crack jokes at their expense. And I would not be best pleased to hear anyone making light of the situation.

Yet, we cannot escape the reasons why the all-out favorite is so meagerly priced. For many observers, the Time Person of the Year 2022 is Zelenskyy. And it would be nothing short of a shock for a sizeable portion of his cheerleaders to see anyone but the 44-year-old win the prize.

As shocking as it might be to read, Zelenskyy’s popularity is not universal. And I’m not talking just about Russians or Ukrainians who oppose his iron-fisted political stances.

Accusations of fraud, embezzlement, and alleged ties to controversial figures such as Ihor Kholomoisky have made him unpopular in some quarters.

Furthermore, the fact that the multi-millionaire leader has seen tens of billions of dollars sent by the US government—all while Americans struggle to put food on the table—goes against the popular narrative western media is pushing.

But again, this is not a popularity contest!

Zelenskyy, whether you love him or hate him, has made a phenomenal impact on 2022. So much so that online betting sites are taking bets on Ukraine joining the European Union.

Who would have thought that possible before Russia’s invasion?

The people of Ukraine are about as tough as they come. 

With a history that dates back to circa 32,000 BC, the inhabitants of the eastern European nation have seen invasions, wars, and slaughter. One of its darkest periods came in the Soviet Famine of 1932-33 when the Holodomor “famine” wiped out an estimated 3-5 million of its people.

Like Ireland’s “Great Famine,” this was a man-made genocide engineered by their larger neighbor to the east.

Fast-forwarding through the past ninety years, the people of Ukraine understand their rich history and are proud of their culture. So much so that they remain defiant in the face of the corruption and blatant disregard for humanity shown to them from both sides of the border.

These people have suffered enough. Yet aren’t backing down. As a candidate for Time’s Person of the Year 2022, they have my vote. I’ll be honest in saying that.

Putin is another 2022 Person of the Year prospect to look out for. After all, without his involvement, we wouldn’t be discussing a Russian-Ukraine war.

There’s no way around it—some Time Person of the Year 2022 nominees will be controversial.

One of the most contentious subjects in the United States and, well, across the globe is abortion. There is a very strong case for pro-choice activists to be in with a chance of winning. At odds of +2000, a $100 bet on this collective group would pay out a profit of $2000 if they received the award.

A potential posthumous winner could be in line for Time Person of the Year 2022. That is, of course, England’s Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away in September. 

Again, the British monarch was not popular with everyone. But the same could be said with any of the last Time Person of the Year winners over the past twenty-five years and beyond.

The efforts of the US Supreme Court could also spark debate.

The overturning of the Roe vs. Wade decision was instrumental in the attitudes of voters at this year’s midterm elections. Worth a bet? No doubt.
