An Overview of NextGen Casino Software in 2024

Have you heard of NextGen Casino software? We wouldn’t blame you if you haven’t.

NextGen is a subsidiary of NYX Gaming Limited. NYX acquired them in 2006 after being in business for roughly seven years.

Most of the company history available today revolves around NYX, so that’s what we focus on in the following sections.

Deals with Third Party Suppliers and Operators

NYX calls themselves an Open Gaming System (NYX OGS). In layman’s terms, this means they’re essentially a hub that gives operators access to casino games, sports betting platforms, and other gambling options from third party suppliers.

This enables NYX to offer more than 2,000 game titles to more than 200 customers (operators and other licensees) worldwide.

They work with several third parties, one of which is NextGen, which will be the focus when we get to the games section. But their acquisitions span several gaming niches. One example is when they recently acquired OpenBet, thus allowing NYX to expand further with their sports division.

OpenBet broke records when they processed more than two billion bets at the 2017 Grand National. They processed 68,000 bets per minute.

In June 2017, they made an agreement with PokerStars NJ. They launched 21 games that are compatible with both mobile and desktop devices  for Americans playing from within New Jersey’s borders.

The expansion doesn’t stop there, either.

Just recently, they expanded further when Scientific Games and NYX came to an agreement that Scientific Games will acquire NYX for $631 million (USD). The idea behind the deal was to expand and strengthen their existing portfolio, and to become a “leading force across iGaming, iLottery and Sports.”

And if you read NYX’s PDF for potential customers, they’re definitely becoming a force. They now work with 40+ approved iGaming content suppliers and 30+ payment providers. They provide more than 600 games across all genres.

We’ll show you some examples of their games here in just a moment.

Licensing

NYX is licensed through the UK Gambling Commission.

They also say that they follow the rules set by Malta Gambling Authority, United Kingdom Gambling Commission, Gibraltar Gambling Commission, Alderney Gambling Control Commission, Gambling Supervision Commission of the Isle of Man, and others.

Awards

NextGen has won a few awards, such as:

  • 2013 – The eGaming Review B2B award for RNG Casino Supplier of the Year.
  • 2012 – The Social Gaming Supplier of the Year award from the eGaming Review.
  • 2014 – NYX won EGR’s 2014 B2B award for Special Achievement.

Now let’s look at some of their games.

There are several noteworthy titles here, including licensed titles like:

  • Batman
  • Superman
  • Green Lantern
  • King Kong
  • Judge Dredd

And so on.

Some of the features you’ll find on a NextGen slot machine include:

  • Slide a Wild: You can control the placement and behavior of wild symbols.
  • Up Wild: Every spin will have wild symbols moving up the reels (vertically), leaving extra wilds in its wake. This can be trigged on multiple reels.
  • DynaReel: This activates reel dividers and delivers prizes and bonuses that trigger in unexpected ways.
  • Super Bet: Add an extra bet or ante and you can unlock new features or bonuses.

It’s neat to see when a software provider brings something unique to the table.

And – for some people – it may even be a worthy tradeoff to the most common complaint we found, which is that NextGen doesn’t offer any progressive jackpot slots.

What About Other Games?

Many sources say that they don’t offer table or video poker games – that they only offer slots. And that may have been true at one time, but today they do have a couple of non-slot games you can check out.

Those include:

  • Double Zero Roulette
  • Blackjack Pro Atlantic City – Single and Multi-Hand
  • Blackjack Pro Monte Carlo – Single and Multi-Hand

Here’s hoping they add more in the near future.

Compatibility

They use Flash for desktop/laptop users and HTML5 for mobile users. You can see the games they have for both here.

Conclusion

That’s NextGen (and NYX) for you.

Some people like them; one example is ThePogg.com, who gave them a 9.15/10.

But others don’t. One example is CasinoListings.com, who gave them a 6/10. There are various reasons why people don’t like them. For example, there are no progressive slot machines, their games lack flair, and you can’t tell their games from those of other software providers.

Those are all common complaints.

That said, NextGen is hardly ever the ONLY software provider a casino uses. You usually see them combined with a handful of other software providers (likely also provided by NYX).

So, you can check out their games, and if you like them, great. If not, you’ll likely have several other choices to pick from instead.
