Why is Caitlin Clark Leading the WNBA MVP Race?
Caitlin Clark lit the WNBA on fire in her rookie season. Clark and the Fever struggled early on, winning just three of their first 13 games. They bounced back from their 3-10 start, finishing the season with a 20-20 record and making the playoffs.

The only other early contender preventing Caitlin Clark from being the MVP in the WNBA this year is A’ja Wilson. She has won three MVPs in her career, including being the unanimous MVP last season.
On the other hand, Wilson has never won the award in back-to-back seasons. Also, after an offseason filled with trades, Wilson must learn to play with her new co-star, Jewell Loyd.
Wilson led the WNBA with 26.9 PPG and was second in rebounds (11.9 RPG). Loyd was sixth in scoring with 19.7 PPG. With only one basketball to score with, Loyd could eat into Wilson’s production and prevent her from winning the MVP this year.
Best WNBA MVP Sleeper Pick
The 2025 WNBA MVP odds drop dramatically after the top three. However, one sleeper to consider is A’ja Wilson’s former running mate, Kelsey Plum. The former Aces star was traded to the Sparks this offseason.
Plum is listed at +3500 odds to win the MVP in her first season in LA. She was a good number two last season, posting an average of 17.8 PPG, 4.2 APG, and 2.6 RPG in her final year with Las Vegas.
The veteran guard also shot 33.3% from deep. LA is a young team, and Plum will need to assume a leadership role early. If she can get the Sparks to the playoffs, Plum should receive at least some consideration for the MVP award.
