Why is Cacau Favored to Win?

Cacau, a chocolate Labrador from Brazil, took home the top prize at last year’s World Dog Surfing Championship. The rough surf was no match for the rookie canine surfer last August. She is the even-money favorite at most entertainment betting sites to retain her title this year.

Bovada offers better value on Cacau, listing the defending champ at +150 odds. However, only one winner has ever gone back-to-back.

Winning the Top Dog award in her first year competing was impressive. Now, with a year more of experience under her belt, Cacau should be even better in 2025.

Being a Labrador gives Cacau an edge over many other competitors. Labradors are known for loving the water. Additionally, her size allows Cacau to withstand the force of the waves more easily and maintain her balance on the board.

Top Dog Surfing Title Contenders

As the reigning champion, Cacau is a worthy favorite. However, the Brazilian canine surfing sensation is far from the only pup competing for Top Dog this year. Cherie, Rosie Drottar, and Faith are also contenders for the award this year.

Cherie (+500)

Cherie, a French Bulldog, is tied for the second-best odds to win Top Dog at this year’s World Surfing Championships. Despite being a smaller breed, Cherie competes in the Medium dog division.

In 2019, Cherie won the Medium dog competition and took home Top Dog honors. She also won the single surfing competition for Medium dogs in 2023 but did not win Top Dog. However, her age could be too big of a hurdle for Cherie to overcome.

Rosie Drottar (+500)

The other pup listed at 5-1 in the 2025 World Dog Surfing Championship odds is Rosie Drottar, also known as Rippin Rosie. Like Cacau, Rosie is a Labrador and no stranger to spending hours at a time in the water.

Rosie’s owner, Steve Drottar, is an accomplished surfer in his own right with over 40 years of experience under his belt. His surfing skills have helped Rosie become one of the top canine surfers in the world.

Faith (+650)

Faith the Pit Bull has the fourth-best odds to win Top Dog at +650. She is 13 years old and won her first surfing competition in 2013. The experienced canine surfer has competed in events all over the US, including California and Florida.

In 2023, Faith won the surfing competition for Large Dogs. However, she lost out on Top Dog honors to Carson. Given her age, this could be Faith’s last chance to win the overall competition at the World Dog Surfing Championships.

Best Dog Surfing Value Bet

The favorites are clear, but which pup is the best Dog Surfing Championship sleeper?

Carson, a Terrier, tied for first place in the best Small Dog category in 2023. He also took home Top Dog honors that year. Despite a championship pedigree, Carson is listed at just +900 to win another Top Dog award this year.

In addition to Top Dog and Best Small Dog honors, Carson also won Best Dog/Dog Tandem in 2023. He has been competing in dog surfing competitions since 2019.

Kihei, a Chihuahua-dachshund mix, who was also a dog surfing champion and had the same owners as Carson. His championship experience, as well as that of his owners, makes Carson a great underdog pick for Top Dog at this year’s World Dog Surfing Championship.

Tips for Betting on the Dog Surfing Championships

The World Dog Surfing Championships are a unique competition that can be made even more thrilling thanks to the latest odds. Here are three tips to help you get the most out of wagering on this one-of-a-kind competition.

Consider Past Experience

Surfing is a challenging skill to master, even if you have four legs. With that in mind, betting on experienced canine surfers can increase your chances of picking a winner.

Competing at the World Dog Surfing Championships is not the only way to earn your stripes. There are smaller competitions across the globe that provide future champions the experience they need to earn Top Dog honors.

The experience of a dog’s owner is also important to consider. Owners who have trained previous champions and who have surfing experience themselves have a leg up when it comes to training the next champ.

Research Surf Conditions

Any outdoor sporting event can be affected by the weather, especially water-based events like surfing. The previous two World Dog Surfing Championships have both been impacted by rough, choppy surf conditions.

Rough surfing conditions give bigger, stronger dogs an advantage in the race for Top Dog. However, if the waters are easier to surf in, then the door will be open for smaller dogs to win the award.

Previous winners, such as Carson and Gidget, have proven that small dogs can win the day if given the chance. With that in mind, you should research the surf conditions at Pacifica State Beach before placing your wagers.

Know the Judges and Their Criteria

A third tip for winning your World Dog Surfing Championship bets is to know the judges and their judging criteria. This year’s judges include:

  • Marisa Torres – Surfrider San Mateo
  • Jewel Lucas – Adventure Out
  • Colleen White – Peninsula Humane Society
  • Teresa Nystrom – Peninsula Humane Society
  • Sydney Purkey – Pet Food Express
  • Max Marsh – Surfer

A seventh judge representing the Pacific Beach Coalition will also join the panel.

Dogs compete in 10-minute heats based on size, and judges score each competitor based on their attitude, technique, and the length of the ride. The top two dogs from each heat advance to the final round to compete for Top Dog.

Who Will Win the 2025 Dog Surfing Championship?

This year’s World Dog Surfing Championship odds are full of exciting betting opportunities.

My Dog Surfing Championship prediction is Faith, the Pit Bull mix who is listed at +650 odds. She has won the Large dog division before, and her size should give her an edge over smaller dogs in the final round if the surf is rough for the third straight year.

You can bet on Faith, Cacau, and the other top contenders for the 2025 World Dog Surfing Championships today at BetUS.
