Why is Julian Sayin the 2025 Heisman Favorite?

A true freshman at the time. Julian Sayin watched from the bench as the Buckeyes won the National Championship last year. With Sayin under center to start Week 1, the Buckeyes opened at #3 in the AP Top 25

Sayin and Ohio State took down #1 Texas in the opener, reclaimed the top spot in the AP poll, and have not looked back since.

Much of the Buckeyes’ success this year has been due to their dominant defense, which is allowing just 7.2 PPG to opposing teams. However, Sayin and the offense have also started to round into form. Ohio State has scored 34+ points in five straight games.

The Heisman case for Sayin is easy: he is the QB on the best team in college football. If he can lead Ohio State to a Big Ten title and end the Buckeyes’ losing streak against Michigan, Sayin will win the Heisman.

2025 Heisman Trophy Sleepers

The regular season is winding down, but there is still plenty of time for Heisman hopefuls to make moves in a wide-open race. Here are two sleepers to watch in this year’s Heisman Trophy race.

Fernando Mendoza (+175)

Indiana has risen to #2 in the AP poll, and it debuted at #2 in the CFP poll. The play of quarterback Fernando Mendoza has been a major part of the Hoosiers’ success this season. He has shot up Heisman odds boards at top college football betting sites as a result.

Mendoza has completed 71.3% of his passes this season, the highest of his college career. The Junior has also racked up 2,342 passing yards at a rate of 9.2 YPA. Mendoza has a 26-5 TD:INT ratio this season.

Ty Simpson (+450)

After a rough loss in his debut as a starter, Ty Simpson has helped the Crimson Tide win eight straight games, include four consecutive wins against ranked opponents. He is listed at +450 in the latest Heisman Trophy betting odds.

Simpson’s stats this season include:

Icon of football
  • 2,461 passing yards
  • 66.9% completion percentage
  • 8.3 YPA
  • 21 passing TDs
  • 1 INT

He has led the Tide into the top four in AP poll, but Simpson still has plenty of work left to do. Alabama needs to win out and make the SEC title game for Simpson to have a shot at winning the Heisman this season.

Factors Driving Heisman Trophy Odds

Heisman voting can be a complicated process, but bettors must learn the ins-and-outs of the award to have a chance at winning their futures wagers.

  • 3-2-1 voting system: Each voter ranks their three top choices. First place votes get three points, second gets two, and third place votes are worth one point.
  • Best player on the best team: The Heisman is only awarded to one player, but team success is still a factor. Only one player, Notre Dame’s Paul Hornung (1956), has won the Heisman on a losing team.
  • Importance of position and conference: Offensive players, especially quarterbacks, have an inherent advantage when it comes to Heisman voting. Players in more respected conferences, like the SEC and Big Ten, also have an easier time earning respect from voters.
  • Individual greatness: A player must prove their individual worth, too. Big plays in big games are exactly what a contender needs to create their “Heisman” moment.
  • Season-long performance: Candidates for the Heisman can emerge at any time in the regular season. However, player who have a whole season‘s worth of great performances are more likely to win than candidates who are inconsistent throughout the year.

Heisman Trophy Betting Tips

Keep these three tips in mind when betting on your Heisman picks.

Bet on a QB

In years with weak QB performances, other positions can break through and win the award. However, with QBs dominating the odds boards this deep into the season, it is unlikely a skill position player wins the award. Seven of the last 10 Heisman winners have been quarterbacks.

Consider Strength of Schedule

Simply winning is not enough in college football. A team must beat good opponents to climb the rankings and outstanding performance against tough teams is the only way for a player to solidify their Heisman case. With that in mind, you should favor candidates who play tough schedules against multiple ranked opponents.

Shop for the Best Line Value

Once you decide on a candidate to bet on, you need to shop for the best value. Julian Sayin, for instance, is listed at +150 at BetOnline. However, you can get slightly better value on Sayin at +160 at Lucky Rebel.

Who Will Win the 2025 Heisman Trophy Award?

Icon of football
  • Fernando Mendoza (+175) – Bet now!

Fernando Mendoza, who is second in the latest Heisman odds, and the #2 Hoosiers have been the surprise of the college football season. Indiana is talented, but Mendoza does not have nearly the same level of talent around him as Julian Sayin or Ty Simpson. Succeeding despite a relatively lower level of skill players around him will be the key to Mendoza’s Heisman case.
