The Incredible Hulk Slot Machines
In the old days, slot machines featured nothing but fruit and other basic imagery. As the market started to grow more competitive, however, designers found that visually appealing games drew inincreased revenue and interest. If a gaming company could buy the licensing rights to adapt a movie or TV show, the response from customers was even more enthusiastic. Playtech has long been atthe forefront of this strategy, and their deal with Marvel Comics has allowed them to create slot machine versions of some of the world’s most iconic superheroes.
The Incredible Hulk slot machines are just a single example of this dynamic partnership. Playtech has also created online games for Captain America, the Avengers, and many more. If you’re a fanof superheroes and gambling, this arrangement is a marriage made in heaven.
This article takes an in-depth look at the 5-reel, 50-payline slot based on the 2008 feature film, The Incredible Hulk. From pay tables to bonus features, we’ll discuss every aspect ofthe game and prepare you for some smashing paydays.
About the Incredible Hulk
The Hulk was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and made his debut in The Incredible Hulk #1 in May of 1962. This green-skilled powerhouse is the alter ego of Dr. Bruce Banner, amild-mannered scientist who was accidentally exposed to massive amounts of radiation after saving a teenager who wandered onto a test site just minutes before the detonation of a gamma bomb.
The Hulk has often been depicted as a nearly mindless brute, constantly lashing out at anything he perceives to be a threat. The madder he gets, the stronger he gets, and he’s been shown capableof fighting the entire Avengers roster when particularly infuriated. This portrayal has varied over the years, however, with Banner’s intellect occasionally allowing him to master the immenserage that swells inside him.
If you’re unfamiliar with the character, here are some of the most notable versions of the Hulk outside the world of comic books:
- The Incredible Hulk
This television show starred Bill Bixby as Dr. David Banner, and it aired on CBS for five seasons (1978 to 1982). Arnold Schwarzenegger lost out on the part of the Hulk because he wasn’tconsidered tall enough, and so fellow bodybuilder Lou Ferrigno landed his career-defining role. Later, the series would return to NBC for a trio of made-for-TV movies with the same cast (andfeaturing Marvel heroes such as Thor and Daredevil).
Released in 2003 and directed by Oscar winner Ang Lee, this was the first big-screen appearance of the jade goliath. The film starred Eric Bana as Bruce Banner, while the Hulk was a CGIcreation. The excellent supporting cast included Jennifer Connelly, Sam Elliott, and Nick Nolte. While it made more than $245 million at the box office, fans were upset by the overallproduct.
- The Incredible Hulk
Five years after the first film, Marvel tried to reboot the franchise. This time around, Edward Norton was cast in the lead role, and viewers were once again given the Hulk’s origin story. The movie was more popular with fans, but Norton clashed repeatedly with producers and was removed from consideration when it was time to make the first Avengers film.
- The Avengers
This blockbuster superhero film was released in 2012, and it made $1.520 billion at the global box office. Banner is recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D., and he later turns into the Hulk for a massivebattle in New York City against invading alien forces. This time around, the role of Banner is played by Mark Ruffalo, while his jade counterpart is created with CGI effects.
- Avengers: Age of Ultron
A sequel was inevitable after the success of the first film, and it was released in theaters around the globe in 2015. Mark Ruffalo returned as Banner, and this time his character gets caughtup in the struggle against an artificial intelligence who wants to eradicate humanity in order to save the planet. The film was just as well received as the original (at least in terms ofrevenue), and Banner even gets a romantic subplot with none other than the Black Widow.
Incredible Hulk Symbols and Payouts
During the base game, the following symbols and payouts are available on the Hulk slot machine from Playtech:
- Incredible Hulk Logo
This is the game’s scatter symbol. In addition to possibly awarding free games, it also provides the following payouts when part of a winning combo: 10 credits for three matches, 25 for four, and 100 for five.
This is the game’s wild symbol, and it appears on reels two through four. It substitutes for all symbols except the scatter and Smash Bonus, and it features a close-up image of the Hulk’sgrimacing face. For more on this icon, please read the next section.
- Smash Bonus Icon
Getting this icon on reels one and five activates the Smash Bonus. More on this in the next section.
- Radiation Symbol
Everyone should recognize the universal symbol for radiation, as you can see it on display in everything from hospitals to horror movies. It’s actually not so bad in this slot, though, as itprovides the following payouts: five credits for two matches, 100 for three, 400 for four, and 4000 for five.
- Beaker of Gamma-Irradiated Liquid
I have no idea why someone would leave a beaker of liquid sitting around that’s been exposed to gamma radiation. While it might be toxic to drink, it does provide the following payouts whenpart of a winning combo: three credits for two matches, 30 for three, 100 for four, and 500 for five.
- Police Car and Attack Helicopter
If you’re going to have a battle scene with a rampaging giant, you need some stuff to get smashed and blown up. Cop cars and military helicopters are perfect for such destruction, and thefeature film shows a number of them getting sent to the great scrapyard in the sky. If either makes up a winning combination during the game, they pay the following: two credits for twomatches, 20 for three, 50 for four, and 200 for five.
- Ace and King
The highest playing card values in poker, they’re used in this slot (and most others) as filler. While they can’t be mixed and matched, either icon pays the following when part of a winningcombination: 12 credits for three matches, 40 for four, and 100 for five.
- Queen and Jack
More playing card values. This time around, the symbols are worth 10 credits for three matches, 30 for four, and 75 for five.
- Ten and Nine
These playing card icons round out the list of symbols that are available on the Hulk slot machine. If either makes up a winning combination, they pay the following: seven credits for threematches, 25 for four, and 50 for five.
Bonus Features on the Hulk Slot Machine
In the previous section, we looked at the basic payouts provided on the main reels. Now, let’s shift gears and examine some of the special features provided as part of this slot machine.
This game is activated when the Smash Bonus icon turns up on reels one and five during the base game. The screen switches to a cityscape, where the Hulk finds himself surrounded by policecars and attack helicopters. If the Hulk is able to smash at least three of the seven cars, then the player receives a cash prize. If at least one of the helicopters goes down in flames, then a bonus multiplier is included. There’s also the possibility of the Hulk Rage Feature being randomly triggered, which allows the ferocious creature to wipe out all seven cop cars atthe same time.
If three or more scatter symbols turn up on the reels, the player gets 10 free spins. During these bonus spins, all winnings are tripled. More games can also be won, and there’s no limit tohow many can be picked up in this fashion.
If the wild Hulk symbol shows up in the center of reel three, the wild expands across the reel and two re-spins are awarded. If the symbol shows up on reels two through four, the wildexpands across these reels during one bonus re-spin. The expanding icon cannot be retriggered during the re-spins.
Like all Marvel slot machines from Playtech, the Hulk game offers players the chance to win one of four mystery progressive jackpots. These payouts occur at random, so the progressive screen caneven be activated following a losing spin.
The lowest jackpot is called Power, and it’s usually worth a few hundred dollars. The biggest is Ultimate Power, and it can climb to more than a million dollars. Other jackpots include ExtraPower and Super Power.
When you’re transported to the special progressive screen, you’ve automatically won. At this point, the only question is which jackpot you’re going to walk away with.
The progressive screen includes 20 squares on a 4×5 layout. Each square conceals an icon associated with one of the progressives, and you reveal them by clicking on symbols one at a time. Whenyou get three identical icons, you’ll win the jackpot associated with the symbol. Afterwards, the progressive amounts resets to a base level and begins to grow again.
The following options are available on the game’s control panel:
As you might have guessed, clicking this button sets the reels in motion. While the reels are spinning, the button changes to display a stop option, allowing you to halt the spin a fewseconds ahead of schedule (without changing the outcome).

Graphics and Sound
This is consistently the weakest area on almost all of the Marvel slots from Playtech. This slot is no exception.
Those looking for brilliant sound effects and music are likely to be disappointed, as the game only features a few basic sounds to accompany the spinning of the reels. Unfortunately, the graphicsaren’t much better.
While the symbols are of a professional quality, their lack of movement is a step down from what many modern slots offer. They do animate slightly when part of a winning combination, but anyonefamiliar with 3D slots is sure to roll their eyes.
The only part of the game where there’s a decent amount of activity is in the Hulk Smash Bonus. Here, the title character gets to wail on police cars and military choppers, and it provides amuch-needed change of pace from the otherwise static feel of the game.
The Incredible Hulk slot machines aren’t going to blow you away with their visual innovation, but that’s likely to be ignored by most players. The main focus is going to be on payouts, and that’ssomething the game does exceptionally well. While it doesn’t have as many bonus features as other Marvel-related games from Playtech, the base payouts and 50-paylines are more than satisfactoryfor turning customers into winners. Once you’ve got a few cash prizes in your account (and maybe even a progressive jackpot), you may find yourself shouting iconic lines such as “Hulk smash!” orsinging the following lyrics from the 1966 animated series:
Belted by gamma rays!
Turns into the Hulk.
Ain’t he unglamorous!
Wreckin’ the town with
the power of a bull!
Ain’t no monster clown who is as loveable!
As ever-lovin’ Hulk!
