Owl Eyes is a 5 reel, 50 pay line slot machine developed by NextGen for land based and online casinos.
Based on the name, Owl Eyes sounds like a straightforward animal themed slot machine. But we were surprised to find out that this game offers more than just owls, namely in the form of a uniqueatmosphere and interesting music.
The atmosphere alone makes Owl Eyes worth trying, while there are a few other redeeming qualities about this slot.
On the other hand, Owl Eyes could use more special features, and we think that it’s lacking in a couple of other areas too.
Keep reading to find out more on the pros and cons of Owl Eyes as we cover its atmosphere, music, animations, pay table, graphics, bonuses, and comparisons to similar slot machines.
Most animal themed slot machines take a simple nature approach, where they include the animal’s natural habitat along with creatures from the same environment.
Owl Eyes is different, though, because its atmosphere feels more like a game based on fairies.
The background is a forest filled with trees, and you’ll see neon green lights floating around the forest. We assume these lights are fireflies fluttering around, but they could be mistaken forfairies too.
You’ll also see neon mushrooms underneath the trees, which completes the forest’s magical look.
During the main game, you’ll hear a running stream, crickets, birds, and other wilderness sounds. These sounds go well with the background graphics to create the nighttime scene that owls thrivein.
Once you spin the reels, you’ll hear a mixture of chanting and mystical music. This again feels more related to fairies and magic than owls, but the chanting music certainly doesn’t hurt thegame.
Owl Eyes also features different sound effects for winning payouts.
One more sound effect is the owl hooting when the moon scatter appears on the reels. This is a nice way to show that this is indeed a game about owls and not a fairytale slot.
The entire time that you’re playing Owl Eyes, you’ll see little neon fireflies fluttering in the background. A rabbit also pops out from the left side of the screen occasionally before runningoff.
You’ll see a few animations during winning payouts, including the following: the owl flying through the nighttime sky, multi colored lines going through winning pay lines, and the forest turninginto a moonlit sky when the bonus is triggered.
The symbols and payouts in Owl Eyes are as follows:
- Owl Wild
- Appearing only on reels 2, 3, and 4, the owl substitutes for everything except the moon scatter. The owl offers no payouts on its own.
- Moon Scatter
- 3 or more moon symbols anywhere on the reels triggers the bonus. You’ll also receive a multiple payout on your triggering spin, including 100x your triggering bet for 5 symbols, 20x for 4,and 5x for 3.
- Featuring a smiling face, the tree pays 1,000 credits for 5 symbols, 100 for 4, and 25 for 3.
- The skunk pays 800 credits for 5 symbols, 60 for 4, and 25 for 3.
- This patch of mushrooms pays 600 credits for 5 symbols, 50 for 4, and 20 for 3.
- Laying on top of a stream, this feather offers 500 credits for 5 symbols, 40 for 4, and 20 for 3.
- A, K
- The A and K pay 200 credits for 5 symbols, 30 for 4, and 15 for 3.
- Q, J
- These letters offer 100 credits for 5 symbols, 25 for 4, and 10 for 3.
- 10, 9
- These numbers pay 75 credits for 5 symbols, 10 for 4, and 5 for 3.
The symbol graphics are good, although they aren’t the game’s biggest strength.
The best detail can be seen in the feather, moon, and mushrooms, while the owl, skunk, and tree look above average.
Our only serious complaint about the symbols is that Owl Eyes features generic letters and numbers. With so many creatures in the forest, NextGen could’ve used additional unique symbols to fillout the lower payouts.
Owl Eyes Slot Bonus Features
The lone bonus in Owl Eyes is free spins, which you trigger with 3 or more moon scatter symbols. The only other special feature is the Gamble option, which you can read more about below alongwith the free spins.
When you trigger free games, the background changes to a starry sky with the moon on the left hand side. This reminds us of some outer space slot machines that we’ve played, but it also fits thetheme of an owl’s favorite prowling time.
You’ll also hear music that sounds like a combination of a Tim Burton and Steven Spielberg movie.
You initially start out with 5 free spins, but you can retrigger them by getting 3 or more moon scatters on the reels. We were never able to retrigger the free spins in the three times that weplayed them.
One big perk to the free games is that you get additional stacked owl wilds, which gives you a strong chance to win big payouts. Betting €0.50 per spin, we won over €60.00 once during the freespins.
After any winning spin, you can choose to gamble your payout(s) for more money.
Choosing the Gamble feature takes you to a second screen, where you’ll see the back of a playing card. You can double your payout by correctly guessing if the card’s color will be red or black,or quadruple your winnings by choosing the card’s suit.
If you win, you can either choose to take your winnings or gamble them again. You can win five consecutive times before you’re forced to return to the main game and spin the reels again.
If you lose at any time, you lose both your triggering stake and anything that you’ve won during the Gamble feature.
You can change pay lines from 1 50, and change your coin denomination from €0.01 to €2.00. This makes for a maximum bet of €0.01 and a maximum wager of €100.00.
The most attractive thing about the betting options is that you can use 50 pay lines, which is more than the average online slot. Of course, if €0.50 is more than you care to bet per spin, thenyou can always play fewer pay lines.
You can spin the reels automatically for a set number of spins by using the Auto play option. This features a sliding bar that you adjust between 5 and 100 spins.
You’ll also find a Last Settings button that allows you to use the Auto play option from your last setting.
One more option is the ability to turn sound on and off by clicking the speaker button in the lower left hand corner.
The win frequency in Owl Eyes is low for a 50 pay line slot machine.
We often found ourselves experiencing long losing streaks, including one time where we lost 12 times in a row.
We were betting €0.05 per line €2.50, and we scaled it back to €0.01 after taking heavy losses. Luckily there were times that we hit big wins in bonus rounds, but this didn’t happen often in ourexperience.
Return to Player RTP
RTP for Owl Eyes is 95.3%, which is average for an online slot.
Considering that the RTP is average and the win frequency is low, it feels like you don’t win enough in Owl Eyes. Because of this, we don’t recommend betting any more than €0.01 per pay line.
You might even consider only playing 20 or 30 pay lines per spin if you’re trying to make a small bankroll last.
The rules for Owl Eyes are standard for a 5 reel slot machine, which you can see below:
- Payouts are made according to the pay table.
- Scatter wins are added to pay line wins.
- All payouts are made from left to right, except for scatter wins, which pay anywhere on the reels.
- If two wins occur on the same line, only the highest payout counts.
- Malfunction voids all pays and plays.
Comparison to Other Bird Themed Slot Machines
Below you can see how Owl Eyes compares to a couple of other bird themed slot machines, including Betsoft’s Birds! and Amaya’s Penguins in Paradise.
This 5 reel slot machine is unique in that any bird that forms a winning pay line stays on the wires reels, while non winning birds fly off. This helps you form more payouts within the same turnflight.
If you get 4 or more consecutive wins in the same flight, you’ll earn free spins (flights). This adds to the joy since you’ll have already racked up plenty of money due to the consecutivepayouts.
While Birds! has an interesting setup, the best quality of this game is the graphics. The 3D graphics are highly advanced, and you’ll also enjoy both rural and city backgrounds.
The only downside to Birds! is that this game doesn’t offer any special features beyond the free spins and changing backgrounds. But the graphics in Birds! are enough to make this slot worthplaying more.
Penguins in Paradise
This 5 reel, 25 pay line slot machine is based on penguins forsaking their freezing artic environment for a tropical beach vacation.
The background does a good job of setting up this vacation atmosphere by featuring the ocean, a sandy beach, and palm trees. The symbols also reflect the theme, including a sandcastle buildingpenguin, surfing penguin, dancing penguin, and palm trees in the shape of a heart.
The background and symbol graphics aren’t on par with Birds! or Owl Eyes, but the animations are really good in this game. You’ll see a penguin surfing on a big wave, a fish hopping out of amixed drink, and a penguin dancing with its lei on.
We also like how Penguins in Paradise offers a couple of bonus features, including free spins and a second screen surfing bonus. The latter sees you choose surfing tricks for a penguin toperform, and the judges will score your moves.
Overall, Penguins in Paradise isn’t as strong visually as Owl Eyes or Birds!, but it has more animations and some good bonuses.
Owl Eyes is more than just another animal themed slot because it offers an almost magical atmosphere. The sounds of birds, crickets, and a running stream go nicely with the fairytale likegraphics and neon fireflies.
We also like the music that plays both when the reels are spinning and when you trigger free spins.
One more thing to like about Owl Eyes is the betting options since you can play up to 50 pay lines, and use Auto play to keep the reels spinning when you’re busy.
Downsides to this game include a low win frequency and limited features. Regarding the win frequency, we didn’t hit many payouts over the course of several hundred spins, which isn’t good for a50 line slot.
As for bonuses, you can trigger 5 free spins and gamble your winnings at any point. But given how good Owl Eyes’ graphics, animations, and music are, this game could support a second screen bonusround too.
Despite the drawbacks, the atmosphere and music in Owl Eyes make it worth playing. Just be careful of your bet size, though, because you won’t win very often.
