Zhang Weili vs. Rose Namajunas – UFC 261

| April 22, 2021 2:57 am PDT

Despite UFC 261 being ridiculously stacked, Zhang Weili vs. Rose Namajunas is the one I’m most looking forward to.

So, making my predictions and pick for Zhang vs. Namajunas on April 24 has been a pleasure. This co-main event for the women’s strawweight title should be up there with the best bouts of the year, but that doesn’t mean I’ve struggled to make my betting pick in this one.

Speaking of betting, the odds for Zhang vs. Namajunas might favor the champ, Weili, but not by much. The Chinese superstar is a moderate favorite in this scrap, and I’ll be discussing why she holds the value right now.

Keep reading for the best bets for Zhang vs. Namajunas, as well as my predictions and pick for the fight.

Zhang vs. Namajunas – Who Wins?

  • Zhang Weili by KO/TKO

Too powerful and too tough, I’m predicting a knockout for Zhang Weili on the night.

Namajunas is certainly one of the most talented fighters in women’s MMA, but I believe that this is about as bad as bad stylistic matchups get for her.

I will explain my thoughts behind why Zhang beats Namajunas after I cover the odds and best bets for this fight.

Latest Odds for Zhang vs. Namajunas

Zhang Weili to Win-190
Rose Namjunas to Win+155

The folks over at BetUS have some top odds for Zhang to beat Namajunas.

You can get -190 right now on the belt to return to China after UFC 261, and I think that’s a pretty solid price still. I’m predicting her odds to hit the needle to hit around the -280 mark with some bookies on fight night and would suggest betting on Zhang now (if she is your choice).

Namajunas, aiming to make history as the first two-time UFC strawweight champ, comes in at +155.

Look, there’s no denying that she is an elite fighter at 115, and she will certainly have her supporters. But I don’t see how she share a cage for five rounds with such a relentless pit bull and not get badly bitten.

Keep that in mind as I run through my best bets for the fight.

The Best Bets for Zhang vs. Namajunas

  • Zhang to Win
  • Zhang to Win by KO/TKO
  • Fight Under 3.5 Rounds

The moneyline odds for Zhang to win are -190.

As sensible as bets go, you’re not going to find better ones on this card. You can keep things tight by taking her to win, as the odds are still good enough to do so.

My predictions and betting pick for Zhang vs. Namajunas are in line with betting on the champ to win by KO/TKO. I’d expect odds above the +100 mark for this bet, but I can’t be certain about that.

As I write this, the Zhang vs. Namajunas prop bets have not been released. But if you’re reading this in the future, head over to the top UFC sportsbooks to check them out.

The last of my top bets for Zhang vs. Namajunas is the fight to end under the 3.5 Round mark. I genuinely believe that this could be over within a single round, but if the odds are good for Under 3.5, you should definitely think about taking this wager.

Now we’ve covered the odds and best bets for Zhang vs. Namajunas, it’s time to break things down a little.

Why Namajunas Beats Zhang

Here’s a Zhang Weili vs. Rose Namajunas prediction you’re probably not expecting just yet — this could be the making of her as a global superstar.

Incredibly, there are still some that doubt she is the real deal. Allow me to say she is super legit and could probably be in the female G.O.A.T discussion in a few years. Before she can think about that, Zhang must first concentrate on the job at hand, which is Rose.

And trust me, she will not be thinking about anything else.

Stylistically, Weili faces her own challenges in closing the distance against Namajunas. Still, I don’t envisage her having too much trouble walking the American down and pushing her up against the fence.

The champ is more dangerous in close quarters and will be looking to keep things tight. She will be more than aware of leaving herself vulnerable against her opponent’s superior outside fighting nous. But her diligence will payoff once Rose is stifled and runs out of options.

Put simply, I think Rose might enjoy some early success, but will apart as soon as Zhang finds her range. She will look to dominate Rose in the clinch and keep her stationary while landing powerful shots to slow her down.

My prediction for Zhang vs. Namajunas is a knockout win for the champion in Round 1. But if this happens, will that prove that Rose never wanted the fight at all?
