Western United vs. Sydney FC – A-League, May 15, 2021
All of a sudden, Western United is in a spot of bother. Mark Rudan’s men welcome Sydney FC to Ballarat on Saturday, May 15, having suffered three straight defeats.
Meanwhile, the defending champions have only lost two of their previous 13 matches – and that hot streak includes a 2-0 victory over Western back in March.
After looking at the A-League odds and breaking down the recent form of both sides, I will share my Western United vs. Sydney FC prediction and betting pick.
Western United vs. Sydney FC Odds
As expected, Sydney FC (1.71) is the bookmakers’ favorite to claim all three points on Saturday. The Sky Blues have been hugely impressive lately and are expected to produce another dominant performance against Western United (4.35).
After losing to the reigning champs in March, Western enjoyed a run of four wins in six games. However, Rudan’s side has only managed to pick up one win in their last five outings.
Before we get to my Western United vs. Sydney FC betting pick, we need to take a closer look at both sides.
Assessing Western United’s Form
Following a positive run of five wins in nine games, things were looking up for Western. But the Green & Black have now dropped out of the top six and are in serious danger of missing out on a Finals Series berth altogether.
The club’s three-game losing streak began with a 2-1 defeat to Brisbane at the start of the month. That was quickly followed by a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of the Wanderers before Perth crushed Western 3-0 on Wednesday.
Besart Berisha bagged seven goals in a ten-game hot streak between February and April. However, the A-League’s all-time leading scorer has failed to find the back of the net in all of his last seven appearances.
With very little attacking threat coming from anyone else, Western will likely struggle to break down Sydney’s sturdy backline.
Sydney FC Team News and Analysis
It seems strange that Corica’s men have only picked up one win in their last six matches. But given that they have suffered just one defeat in that time, they probably won’t be too displeased with their recent efforts.
Of course, four draws have prevented Sydney from challenging Melbourne City for the premiership title. Still, a top-six finish is well within reach.
A 3-2 defeat to rivals Western Sydney at the beginning of May has taken the shine off the team’s defensive record.
Bobo had question marks when he returned to the club earlier in the year, although he quickly silenced his doubters. With eight goals in his last 13 appearances, the Brazilian has been immense of late.
Needless to say, Bobo will be licking his lips at the prospect of exploiting Western’s leaky defense.
Western United vs. Sydney FC Prediction and Pick
Sydney FC to Win1.71
I’m following the top online sportsbooks and backing Sydney FC to beat Western United this weekend.
Rudan’s men have suffered three straight defeats, and if their recent defensive performances are anything to go by, they are likely to register another loss when the Sky Blues come to town.
If the defending champs bring their A-game to Ballarat, they will almost certainly leave with all three points.
