Western Sydney Wanderers vs. Sydney FC – A-League, May 1, 2021

| April 30, 2021 5:41 am PDT

The Wanderers welcome arch-rivals Sydney FC to Bankwest Stadium on Saturday, May 1, for the second Sydney Derby of the 2020/21 A-League season.

The two sides produced a 1-1 draw back in January, but a lot has changed since then.

While Sydney FC heads into Saturday’s showdown on a six-game unbeaten streak, the Wanderers will be eager to snap a six-match winless run and secure the Sydney bragging rights this weekend.

Below, I assess the bookmakers’ odds and analyze the teams before sharing my Western Sydney Wanderers vs. Sydney FC prediction and betting pick.

Wanderers vs. Sydney FC Odds

Western Sydney Wanderers to Win3.75
The Draw3.65
Sydney FC to Win1.90

When you consider the contrasting form of these two sides, it is hardly surprising that 10bet views Sydney FC as the favorite to claim all three points on Saturday.

Having said that, the Wanderers invariably rise to the occasion whenever their neighbors visit. They are unbeaten in the previous five meetings between the teams, recording two wins and three draws in that time.

Previewing the Sydney Derby

The Wanderers only lost three of their opening 13 matches this season and looked set to seal a top-six finish without any problems. However, a damaging six-game winless streak has impeded their push for Finals Series soccer.

Granted, Carl Robinson’s men have drawn three of their last five matches, so their recent downturn hasn’t been a total disaster. But if they don’t start winning soon, they will find themselves out of contention for a postseason berth.

Following a 2-1 loss to Brisbane, Western Sydney suffered a humiliating 5-4 defeat at the hands of lowly Melbourne Victory last time out. Robinson’s men were 5-1 down with 15 minutes remaining before scoring three late goals to make the scoreline look a little less embarrassing.

Only three teams have scored more goals than Robinson’s men this season. Still, they currently possess the third-worst defensive record in the A-League.

The Wanderers can take confidence from their recent record against Sydney FC, but they will need to be at their very best to extend their unbeaten run in the Sydney Derby.

Year Home Team Away Team Result
2021 Sydney FC Western Sydney 1-1
2020 Western Sydney Sydney FC 1-1
2020 Sydney FC Western Sydney 0-1
2019 Western Sydney Sydney FC 1-0
2019 Western Sydney Sydney FC 1-1

Having made a shaky start to the campaign, Sydney FC is now looking like the team that clinched the premiership and championship double last year.

Not only have the Sky Blues avoided defeat in their last six games (three wins, three draws), but they have also lost just one of their previous 11 outings (five wins, five draws).

Although Steve Corica’s men haven’t been overly prolific in front of goal, their recent rise has been built on some impressive defensive efforts. Indeed, a clean sheet in Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Victory was their third shutout in six matches – and they now boast the second-best defensive record in the league.

Looking at the bigger picture, the defending champs have only lost four of their 19 games this season, conceding just 18 goals along the way.

Melbourne City may be the bookies’ favorite to clinch the premiership, but Sydney FC won’t go down without a fight.

My Wanderers vs. Sydney FC Pick

  • Sydney FC to Win

Form often goes out the window when two rivals meet in a high-profile derby. However, there is no hiding from the fact that Sydney FC is playing on a different level to Western Sydney at the moment.

The Wanderers will almost certainly give the Sky Blues a run for their money, but I’m backing Corica’s men to extend their hot streak and claim all three points – and the Sydney bragging rights – on Saturday.
