Western Sydney Wanderers vs. Newcastle Jets – A-League, January 29, 2021
After losing their opening four games this season, the Jets finally picked up their first win of 2020/21 last weekend, beating Wellington Phoenix 2-1.
Newcastle visits Bankwest Stadium to face the Wanderers on Friday, January 29, with the Western Sydney outfit sitting four points ahead in the A-League table.
I discuss the bookmakers’ odds before sharing my Western Sydney Wanderers vs. Newcastle Jets prediction and betting pick.
Western Sydney Wanderers vs. Newcastle Jets Odds
Although the top online betting sites view the Wanderers (2.25) as the favorites to win this one, the high price for the home win points towards a tight game on Friday.
Western Sydney has the home advantage, but the Jets (2.95) will fancy their chances of upsetting the odds after securing all three points last time out.
Western Sydney Wanderers vs. Newcastle Jets Preview
When WSW lost their opening game to newcomers Macarthur FC, it looked as though the Wanderers were set for another tricky season.
But having taken seven points from their previous three outings, Carl Robinson’s men now find themselves just two points off top spot in the standings.
Victories over Newcastle and Central Coast Mariners, along with an impressive draw against Sydney FC, have seen Western Sydney lay the foundations for a successful campaign. Granted, Robinson’s men have only scored four goals this term, but they have also conceded just three in reply.
Strikers Simon Cox and Bernie Ibini-Isel are yet to get off the mark this season, although James Troisi and Nicolai Muller have both kicked off the campaign with goals.
Young goalkeeper Daniel Margush achieved his first shutout of 2020/21 last weekend, and he will be confident of keeping another clean sheet against the low-scoring Jets.
It’s safe to say that Newcastle’s season could not have started any worse. Indeed, four straight defeats left the club rooted to the foot of the table, with seven goals conceded in the process.
After losing 1-0 to the Mariners on Matchday 1, three consecutive 2-1 losses suggested that Craig Dean’s men weren’t too far away from picking up their first points of the season.
Four days after losing to Brisbane Roar, the Jets beat Wellington Phoenix by the same scoreline. The Kiwis recorded 23 shots, with Newcastle seeing just 35% possession. However, goals from Valentino Yuel and Roy O’Donovan got the job done.
The Jets faced eight attempts on their goal last weekend, while they managed to convert two of their three shots on target. With very few opportunities coming their way at the moment, they will need to be equally as clinical against WSW.
Western Sydney Wanderers vs. Newcastle Jets Prediction and Pick
Western Sydney Wanderers2.25
The Wanderers can take confidence from the fact that they have already beaten Newcastle this season. Playing at home this time around, Robinson’s side should stand an even better chance of securing all three points.
Having lost four of their opening five games, it is difficult to make a case for the Jets getting anything from this game. Yes, they beat the Nix last time out, but they could easily have lost that match.
Ultimately, odds of 2.25 for the home win are too good to miss here.
