West Bromwich Albion vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers – English Premier League, May 3, 2021
This could be the last Black Country for a while, as West Brom continues to cling on to its Premier League status. Wolves would delight in sending its bitter rival down but has not been looking very convincing of late.
West Brom has given its fans some faint hope over the last few months but could go into this game 12 points from safety. That’s surely too much to make up in the coming weeks.
The cliché is that form goes out of the window when it comes to local derbies. Things are slightly different with no fans allowed in the stadiums but this game could really go either way.
The bookmakers fancy Wolves to just shade it but West Brom is the side in dire need of points, so the draw or home win bets would seem to be better value.
West Bromwich vs. Wolves Preview
When Keinan Davis scored his first ever goal for Aston Villa deep into stoppage time on Sunday, West Brom’s hopes of staying up this season took another hefty blow. Sam Allardyce would have still had a job on his hands to keep his side up even if the Baggies had won the West Midlands derby. But just a solitary point gained is not going to be enough.
There have been some plus points over the last month or so, as West Brom has picked up unlikely points and played much better than its league position suggests.
Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo could probably do with the win though, as he attempts to convince the fans and the club that he is the right man to lead the team next season. A 4-0 thrashing at home at the hands of lowly Burnley at the weekend is just the latest kick in the teeth that he and his Wolves players have experienced.
The Portuguese head coach will be especially disappointed with the lack of enthusiasm and spirit shown by his players in that game against Burnley though. There might have been some very important absentees in the Wolves starting eleven for a majority of the season, but there is no excuse for performances like that.
West Bromwich vs. Wolves Prediction and Betting Pick
West Bromwich Albion to Win+177
I’ve no doubt that it will turn out to be a case of ‘too little too late’ but I think West Brom is far more likely to win this one on Monday.
Wolves just didn’t turn up for the game against Burnley and, even with an expected improvement demanded by the manager, I can’t see the players raising their game enough to overcome a determined West Brom.
