West Bromwich Albion vs. Liverpool – English Premier League, May 16, 2021

Only one of these teams has something to play for now, so it is very unlikely that we will see anything but a Liverpool victory on Sunday.

West Brom will play for pride – and has looked better in the last month or so – but this will be the start of a three-game win plan for Jurgen Klopp.

But it is a very long shot for West Brom to overcome a Liverpool side that probably needs to win all three games to qualify for the Champions League just a season after winning the title.

Sam Allardyce has finally lost his record of never being relegated. Turning West Brom’s season around was a job too far for the journeyman coach. There were times when there seemed to be a flicker of hope, but the Baggies were always too far off the pace to really have a chance.

Although the two draws with Villa and Wolves were good results, they both needed to be victories for West Brom.

I would be very surprised if Pereira, out of all the players at the Black Country club, isn’t picked up by a top-flight side.

Liverpool has its sights very much on the rest of this season, though. The style of the victory over Manchester United on Thursday suggests that there is a real belief in the squad that it can finish in the top four and take a Champions League place away from either Leicester or Chelsea.

Those two play each other next, so there is a chance, as one or both will obviously drop some points. Liverpool still has to win, though – but West Brom, Burnley, and Palace are about as comfortable an end to the season you could hope for. Three points at The Hawthorns on Sunday will set Liverpool on its way.

The bookmakers could offer ridiculously large odds for a West Brom win, and I still wouldn’t be tempted. Liverpool showed it meant business at Old Trafford in the week and will now feel it has three very winnable games to save its Champions League qualification.

West Brom may give this a go, but this game will be all over once the first goal goes in.
