Werder Bremen vs. Hoffenheim – Bundesliga, October 25, 2020

Werder Bremen bounced back from the opening day loss to Hertha Berlin with a couple of victories over Schalke 04 and Arminia Bielefeld, while they drew the most recent game with Freiburg on the road. Bremen scored at least a goal in each of their four Bundesliga matches this season, and are in 7th place with seven points.

Hoffenheim, on the other hand, caused the biggest upset of the season so far as they beat the reigning champions Bayern Munich 4-1, but then suffered a couple of defeats to Frankfurt and Dortmund. They snapped the negative run with a 2-0 win over Crvena Zvezda in the Europe League, and now are hoping to avoid the third consecutive league loss when they take on Werder in Bremen. Hoffenheim is a point behind Werder and in 8th position in the standings after the first four rounds.

With Werder winning only three home Bundesliga matches since the start of last campaign (D3, L13) and Hoffenheim claiming the majority of their league points away from home in that span (H:25/A:33), the specter of an away victory looms large in this game. That’s further backed up by Bremen’s inability to defeat Hoffenheim in six league H2H duels at Weserstadion (D4, L2), while just three home Bundesliga wins (in 18 games) at any venue (by either side) have been achieved in this H2H since January 2011.

Hoping to buck that trend, Bremen is without a loss in three league matches this term (W2, D1) as they look to record back-to-back home league victories for the first time since March/April 2019. They might need to open the scoring to achieve that; however, with no side coming back to win in the league after allowing first at the Weserstadion since March 8, 2019 – a run of 22 games.

Florian Kohfeldt will be without Ludwig Augustinsson (muscle), but all the other players are healthy and ready to take on Hoffenheim on Sunday.

Hoffenheim won four of the previous ten H2H encounters (D4, L2), including the last two, while they are unbeaten in the past three meetings at Weserstadion (W1, D2). Even though Hoffenheim has an advantage when it comes to H2H duels, I am not going to back the winner in this one. Seventeen of the last 20 league H2Hs have produced goals on both sides, and that’s why I am going with BTTS in this one. I know the odds are not very attractive, but considering Hoffenheim conceded at least a goal in each of their games in the league so far, this is a sure shot.
