Wellington Phoenix vs. Western United – A-League, April 11, 2021

| April 10, 2021 4:08 am PDT

Western United will be hoping to secure three straight wins for the first time this season when they face Wellington on Sunday, April 11. By contrast, the Nix will be aiming to avoid three consecutive losses.

Not only do Mark Rudan’s men boast a five-point lead over Wellington on the A-League ladder, but they also have two games in hand over the New Zealanders.

After looking at the betting odds, I will share my Wellington Phoenix vs. Western United prediction and pick.

Wellington Phoenix vs. Western United Odds

Wellington Phoenix to Win2.35
The Draw3.50
Western United to Win2.90

At first glance, the high price for the away win stands out here. 10bet views Wellington as the favorite to claim all three points on Sunday, but I see it differently.

When you consider the contrasting form of these two sides, odds of 2.90 for Western United to win seems extremely generous. But before I decide on my Wellington vs. Western United pick, let’s take a closer look at the teams.

Wellington Team Analysis

With just four wins coming in their opening 15 games this season, it’s safe to say that Ufuk Talay’s men have failed to build on last year’s third-place finish.

Scoring goals hasn’t been a problem for the Nix this term. In fact, they have netted more goals than four teams above them in the standings – including Western United. But Wellington’s defensive record is a cause for concern.

Only two sides – Melbourne Victory and Perth Glory – have conceded more goals than Wellington this year.

In contrast, goalkeepers Stefan Marinovic and Oliver Sail have only managed to keep two clean sheets between them.

In fairness, the Phoenix pushed high-flying Melbourne City all the way last weekend, although they could not prevent a 3-2 loss. Heading into Sunday’s clash on the back of successive defeats, Talay’s men are in desperate need of some inspiration.

Ulises Davila has been a bright spot in an otherwise gloomy campaign for the Nix, bagging six goals and two assists so far. But if his teammates don’t start chipping in soon, Wellington can wave goodbye to a top-six finish.

Assessing Western United’s Form

Thankfully for Rudan’s men, they have three games in hand over many of their rivals. They currently find themselves eighth on the A-League ladder, but they could easily shoot up the standings in the coming weeks.

A disappointing run of three defeats in five matches cast doubt over Western United’s top-six credentials last month. But following a start turnaround, the Green & Black head into Sunday’s clash having won three of their previous four outings.

United has beaten Brisbane and Newcastle in recent games and was even able to end Melbourne City’s winning streak last week.

Lachlan Wales has played a pivotal role in United’s recent resurgence, notching two goals and one assist in his previous two appearances. Besart Berisha also contributed a goal and assisted in the victory over City, taking his tally to six goals and two assists for the season.

Better still, Rudan’s men kept a much-needed clean sheet last time out. If they can pick up where they left off against the Jets, they should be too strong for Wellington.

Wellington vs. Western United Betting Pick

Pick
  • Western United to Win
    2.90

Given that Rudan’s men have won each of their last two matches, I’m backing them to register three straight victories on Sunday. The Green & Black seem to have found their rhythm following an indifferent start to the campaign.

On the flip side, Wellington heads into Sunday’s clash on a two-game losing streak. The Nix has clearly struggled at their temporary home in Wollongong this season, so I expect them to suffer another defeat this weekend.
