Wellington Phoenix vs. Newcastle Jets Betting Preview – A-League, January 24, 2021

| January 21, 2021 10:47 am PDT

The Nix face the Jets at WIN Stadium on Sunday, January 24, with both sides still searching for their first A-League win of the season.

Newcastle is rock bottom of the table following four straight defeats, while Wellington has picked up one point from their opening two games.

After taking a look at the bookmakers’ odds, I provide my Wellington Phoenix vs. Newcastle Jets prediction and betting pick.

Wellington Phoenix vs. Newcastle Jets Odds

Wellington Phoenix to Win1.90
The Draw3.60
Newcastle Jets to Win3.75

Sure, Wellington (1.90) hasn’t begun the season in blistering form. But the top online betting sites still view the New Zealanders as the clear favorites to win on Sunday.

The odds for both the Newcastle win (3.75) and the draw (3.60) are high for a reason here. Indeed, the Jets could not have started the campaign in a poorer fashion.

Wellington Phoenix vs. Newcastle Jets Match Analysis

I think the Nix can count themselves pretty unfortunate to have come away from their opening game without anything to show for their efforts.

Despite recording 22 shots against Sydney FC, Wellington lost 2-1 to the defending champions, with wonder-goals from Calem Nieuwenhof and Luke Brattan canceling out Mirza Muratovic’s strike.

Last time out, Ufuk Talay’s men faced 26 shots against Macarthur. However, they still managed to secure a 1-1 draw with the newcomers, despite Alex Rufer’s 62nd-minute red card.

Ulises Davila has been pretty quiet so far this term, starting on the bench against Sydney FC before being substituted against Mcarthur. The Mexican bagged 12 goals and five assists last term, but he is yet to get off the mark this year.

Still, a match against off-form Newcastle provides Davila with the perfect opportunity to open his 2020/21 account.

Four games. Four defeats. Three goals scored. Seven goals conceded. That is not a pretty record, is it?

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what the Jets are working with right now. Losses to the Mariners, Brisbane, Macarthur, and the Wanderers mean that Craig Dean’s men are currently looking up at the rest of the pack.

However, there are still plenty of reasons for Newcastle to be optimistic. The Jets haven’t been beaten by more than one goal this term, and they have scored in three of their four outings. With that in mind, their first points of the season are surely just around the corner.

The off-field issues at the club seem to be having a negative impact on the team’s on-field performances at the moment. But I’m confident that Newcastle will start climbing up the table in the coming weeks.

Wellington Phoenix vs. Newcastle Jets Prediction and Pick

  • The Draw

Ultimately, I just can’t see Newcastle starting the season with five straight losses. The Jets have been unlucky in all of their games so far this term, so I’m backing them to get their first point on the board this weekend.

Following a stellar 2019/20 campaign, the Nix have failed to pick up where they left off last season. Wellington should still be able to avoid defeat on Sunday, but I don’t think they will have enough to claim all three points.
