Wellington Phoenix vs. Macarthur FC – A-League, March 28, 2021
Fresh from thrashing Melbourne Victory 4-1 on Wednesday, the Nix will be looking to continue their revival when Macarthur visits Wollongong on Sunday, March 28.
Having secured three wins in five games, Wellington has climbed to eighth on the A-League ladder – five points behind fifth-place Macarthur. But can the Bulls pick up their third victory in five matches this weekend?

Wellington vs. Macarthur Odds
As you can see, the top online betting sites can barely separate these two teams at the moment. Wellington is the narrow home favorite, although the price for the Macarthur win is only marginally higher.
At first glance, the odds for the draw look tasty. But let’s take a closer look at both sides before getting into my Wellington vs. Macarthur pick.
Wellington Phoenix vs. Macarthur FC Preview
Following a series of indifferent displays, the Nix undoubtedly produced their best performance of the season so far in midweek.
Granted, beating Melbourne Victory isn’t exactly difficult at the moment. But the manner with which Wellington tore through Grant Brebner’s side was hugely impressive – and it will have filled the team with plenty of confidence.
Tomor Hemed capped off an excellent team move to put the Phoenix ahead after just 11 minutes before David Ball added a second goal before half-time. After the break, Ulises Davila and Clayton Lewis both got on the scoresheet, giving the New Zealand outfit a resounding 4-1 win.
With confident victories against Newcastle (2-0) and Perth (3-0) also coming within the past few weeks, things are certainly starting to look a lot brighter for the Kiwis.
On Matchday 2, Wellington and Macarthur produced a 1-1 draw. However, it feels as though the Nix are currently in a better position to get the better of the Bulls this time around.
The A-League newcomers made a flying start to their inaugural top-flight campaign, losing just two of their opening eight games this season. But it’s safe to say that Macarthur’s form has taken a turn for the worse of late.
Ante Milicic’s men have lost three of their last five outings, with heavy defeats coming against Western United, Central Coast, and Melbourne City.
Having said that, the Bulls were able to gain their revenge over Western United last weekend. After suffering a 4-1 defeat in the reverse fixture last month, Macarthur beat United 2-1 last time out, with Matt Derbyshire hitting the target yet again.
Derbyshire has now bagged eight goals in 13 appearances this term, including seven in his previous seven matches.
All things considered, the Bulls must be happy with how their maiden A-League season has gone up to now. After all, they currently find themselves fifth in the standings – just five points shy of first-place Central Coast.
Wellington vs. Macarthur Prediction and Pick
Ultimately, I believe the draw is the best bet for Wellington vs. Macarthur. The two sides produced a tight 1-1 tie back in January – and I’m expecting a similar outcome this time around.
There is no denying that Macarthur outperformed Wellington during the early stages of the season, but it feels like the Nix are beginning to get into their groove again. In my eyes, odds of 3.60 for the draw are too good to miss.
