Wellington Phoenix vs. Central Coast Mariners – A-League, February 14, 2021
The Mariners will be looking to maintain their shock lead at the summit of the A-League ladder when they face off against Wellington Phoenix at WIN Stadium on Sunday, February 14.
The Nix are yet to win a game at their temporary home and currently find themselves second from bottom in the standings – 11 points behind first-place Central Coast.
I discuss the betting odds before giving my Wellington Phoenix vs. Central Coast Mariners prediction and pick.
Wellington Phoenix vs. Central Coast Mariners Odds
As you can see, it still doesn’t seem as though the leading online sportsbooks are taking Central Coast (3.25) seriously at the moment. I mean, the price for a home win is big. But the Mariners are the obvious outsiders here.
Wellington (2.10) heads into Sunday’s game as the bookies’ favorite, although the team’s recent form has not been great.
Wellington Phoenix vs. Central Coast Mariners Preview
Having taken just a single point from their opening three games this term, the Nix actually got the better of the Mariners last month.
Despite facing 23 shots in their previous meeting with Central Coast, goals from Ulises Davila and Jaushua Sotirio saw Wellington pick up their first win of the season – beating the Mariners 1-2 in Gosford.
However, Ufuk Talay’s men quickly returned to losing ways last time out, suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sydney FC.
It goes without saying that a run of three losses in five games is a poor way to start the campaign. Worse still, the New Zealanders are the second-lowest scorers in the league, netting just six goals so far this term.
If the Kiwis don’t turn things around pretty quickly, they can wave goodbye to their chances of emulating last season’s third-place finish.
On the flip side, it’s safe to say that the Mariners are already on course to improve on their efforts in the previous campaign.
Alen Stajcic’s men only managed to accumulate 18 points from 26 matches last season. They have only played seven games this year, yet they have already racked up 15 points!
Alou Kuol continued to enhance his glowing reputation by coming off the bench to bag a match-winning brace last weekend. The Mariners were trailing 1-2 at home to Western United before the teen sensation scored two late goals to earn his side a fifth win in seven games.
In just 306 minutes of A-League soccer, Kuol has notched up five goals, and one assist this season.
The Yellow & Navy could not have dreamed of a better start to 2021. The team has so much momentum at the moment, meaning the Nix will find it difficult to contain the away side on Sunday.
Wellington Phoenix vs. Central Coast Mariners Prediction and Pick
Central Coast Mariners to Win3.25
Until they show any signs of slowing down, I’m going to continue to back the Mariners. Stajcic’s men are riding a seemingly unstoppable wave right now, with young-gun Kuol leading the way.
By contrast, Wellington isn’t in a good place at the moment. The Kiwis can’t seem to establish a rhythm this season, so I can see them suffering another defeat on Sunday.
