Wellington Phoenix vs. Brisbane Roar – A-League, March 21, 2021

The Roar will be aiming to snap a six-game winless run when they face off against Wellington on Sunday, March 21.

On the flip side, the Nix have won two of their last three matches, although Ufuk Talay’s men still find themselves trailing Brisbane by four points on the A-League ladder.

Let’s start by looking at the Wellington vs. Brisbane odds.

Well, it wouldn’t exactly be fair to call Brisbane (2.55) the favorite to win this one, would it?

On paper, the leading online sportsbooks view the Queenslanders as the narrow favorites. However, the price for the Wellington win (2.60) is only marginally higher.

At first glance, the big odds for the draw (3.65) stand out to me.

To say that Wellington has been wildly unpredictable this season would probably be an understatement.

The Nix have shown glimpses of real promise throughout the campaign, with impressive victories coming against the Mariners, Newcastle, and Perth. But they have also suffered some disappointing defeats along the way.

In fact, Talay’s men have lost six of their 11 games this term – and that’s exactly why they find themselves third from bottom in the A-League standings.

Despite taking the lead three times in the previous match, the Kiwis ended up losing 4-3 to the Wanderers. Goals from Ulises Davila, Cameron Devlin, and Tomer Hemed saw the Nix take control on numerous occasions, yet they continuously failed to hold on to their advantage.

Having won two of their last three games, Talay’s men seem to be moving in the right direction. But when you look at the bigger picture, Wellington still has plenty of flaws that need eradicating.

On the topic of flaws, it’s safe to say that Brisbane’s six-match winless run is largely down to one weakness – a lack of attacking threat.

Across their last six outings, Warren Moon’s men have only managed to score two goals, with blanks fired against Macarthur, Newcastle, Sydney FC, and Western United.

Things were looking up when the Roar secured four straight wins earlier in the campaign. I mean, they even netted 13 goals during that hot streak. But since then, three draws and three defeats have seen Brisbane plummet down the A-League ladder.

After bagging five goals during the four-game winning run, Dylan Wenzel-Halls has scored just once in his last six matches. On a brighter night, the Queenslanders have kept two clean sheets in their previous five outings. But in all honesty, Brisbane needs to sharpen up at both ends of the pitch.

It is difficult to imagine the Roar going seven games without a win. However, stranger things have happened in the A-League this year.

At the end of the day, this matchup brings together two clubs in desperate need of points. Both sides will be eager to win this one, although they will also want to make sure that a defeat is out of the equation.

Having taken everything into consideration, I believe the draw is the best bet for Wellington Phoenix vs. Brisbane Roar. I’m expecting this to be a tense encounter – and I think both teams will be happy to settle for a point.
