Wednesday’s MLB Predictions and Betting Tips (May 5, 2021)

| May 5, 2021 12:26 am PDT

The same 15 matchups that took place on Tuesday are on deck again on Wednesday. It starts early at 12:35 PM ET with the White Sox wrapping up a two-get set in Cincinnati. Walker Buehler will be featured on ESPN’s Wednesday Night Baseball, while Yu Darvish can be streamed in a matchup versus the Pirates.

For a peek at the rest of the schedule, check out my MLB predictions for Wednesday. My best bets of the day will come after that.

If you want to take a flier on a 15-team parlay, here’s a full slate of MLB picks on May 5th to help you fill out your card. Here’s a link to the best places to bet baseball online, so you don’t have to go searching.

Of course, trying to nail every game on the board is more than just wishful thinking. It’ll probably never happen.

The best way to go about profiting from an MLB slate is to pinpoint a few games and bet them aggressively. Here’s what’s on my mind for today if you’re interested in applying that strategy.

Top MLB Upset Picks for May 5th

  • Orioles +102 (over the Mariners)
  • Mets -102 (over the Cardinals)
  • Blue Jays +15 (over the Athletics)

I’m going to be an interested spectator anytime John Means is pitching – especially when the Orioles are available at plus money. Entering today’s start in Seattle, the lefty is sporting a sizzling 1.70 ERA and 0.838 WHIP. Baltimore is 4-2 in the six games Means has started – note that both of the losses were by one run in extra innings.

The bottom line is John Means is an emerging ace that not enough people know about. Having said that, insiders and those betting heavily on baseball are more than aware. I doubt this game closes with the Orioles lurking “juice-free.”

Another line that’s a bit perplexing is the Cardinals being the favorites in their tilt against the Mets. Marcus Stroman has been dynamite this season, save for when the Nationals recorded eight hits and four runs off Stroman 12 days ago. However, a deeper look reveals that all eight of those hits were singles.

Marcus has surrendered a total of 13 hits and two runs across his four other starts. He was spinning the ball with total command his last time out.

Consider that New York holds the advantage in the pitching matchup and holds the advantage offensively.

Last but not least in my MLB upset picks is a wager on the Blue Jays.

Since George Springer came off the IL and was inserted atop the order, Toronto’s offense has started to click. The Jays pounded out 26 runs in a three-game sweep of Atlanta, which included a pair of dingers from Springer.

An invigorated batting order north of the border is one reason to like Toronto in Oakland this evening; I’ll leave you with another.

Blue Jays starter Robbie has posted back-to-back quality starts. Most importantly, it’s been two starts in a row where Ray didn’t issue a walk.

Best MLB Bets for Wednesday, May 5th

  • Rockies over the Giants (-112)
  • Indians over the Royals (-165)
  • Red Sox over the Tigers (-183)

As of yesterday, the Giants have the best record in the National League, and the Rockies have the worst. The fact that Colorado is favored to beat San Francisco on Wednesday is telling.

It’s a little mean making these clubs take the field at 1:10 pm local time after they played a doubleheader on Tuesday, but that puts more of an emphasis on today’s starting pitchers.

On the one hand, we have Logan Webb – an up-and-comer for the Giants who has yielded at least three runs in four of his five starts. On the other, we have Jon Gray looking to log at least six innings for the fourth straight outing.

After a disastrous 2020 campaign, the 29-year-old right has turned things around substantially.

Jon Gray – A New Pitcher in 2021
Starts Innings ERA Hits Strikeouts WHIP HR/9
8 39.0 6.69 45 22 1.436 1.4
6 34.1 3.15 27 30 1.194 0.8

Moving along.

Shane Bieber hasn’t been invincible this season like he was in 2020, but don’t let your judgment be clouded by what some other pitchers are doing. Bieber has been his dominant self and is accounting for more than seven innings per start.

I could tell you Shane’s leading the league in strikeouts, or I could be more precise and reiterate that his 68 Ks are the second-most of any pitcher in the modern era (post-1900) through his first six starts.

Book the Indians sooner rather than late as bets backing the Tribe are expected to come pouring in.

Nothing about what Martin Perez is doing has impressed me thus far, and yet I still love the BoSox as one of my top MLB picks for Wednesday. Boston is atop the AL East standings and leads the Majors in batting average.

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, Detroit has the worst record in baseball and is hitting an MLB-worst .195. The Tigers’ run differential was -62 heading into Tuesday night’s game, representing a 34-run gap between them and the next-worst team in the league.

The short version is that the Red Sox are good, and the Tigers are really, really bad. A -183 price tag shouldn’t stop you from pulling the trigger.
