Wednesday’s MLB Predictions and Betting Tips (May 12, 2021)
Despite the Giants and Rangers both getting the day off, a doubleheader at Coors Field gives us a full 15-game slate. The action starts early in New York with Matt Harvey in the house taking on his former team. Harvey has been better of late but is pitted up against a surging Taijuan Walker.
I like the Mets in this spot, but -175 is a pretty steep number as good as Baltimore has been on the road. As far as my top MLB picks for Wednesday, those can be found below. As can predictions for every game on the schedule.
MLB Game Winner Predictions for May 12th
- Mets to beat the Orioles
- Reds to beat the Pirates
- Indians to beat the Cubs
- Padres to beat the Rockies (GM 1)
- Rockies to beat the Padres (GM 2)
- Nationals to beat the Phillies
- Tigers to beat the Royals
- Yankees to beat the Rays
- Athletics to beat the Red Sox
- Braves to beat the Blue Jays
- Brewers to beat the Cardinals
- Astros to beat the Angels
- White Sox to beat the Twins
- Marlins to beat the Diamondbacks
- Mariners to beat the Dodgers
*Stats referenced are through Monday
I like the Indians in what’s a virtual toss-up versus the Cubs. Colorado has their hands full going up against Yu Darvish and Blake Snell; a split against the Padres would have to be considered a victory for the Rockies.
Zack Wheeler is coming off an absolute gem his last time out and has the Phillies sitting at -140 on the road in the nation’s capital. With the public likely to hop on Wheeler’s coattails in the matchup in D.C., I’m pegging the Nationals to come out on top.
While I’m on the fence about many of these MLB predictions, there are a handful of games I couldn’t wait to lock in.
Top MLB Upset Picks for May 12th
- Angels +103 (over the Astros)
- Marlins +113 (over the Diamondbacks)
Don’t pay too much attention to Andrew Heaney’s season ERA. It’s still skewed from a disastrous opener in which he gave up seven unearned runs in three innings of work. The 29-year-old southpaw has been much better of late, including tossing 6.2 innings of shutout baseball in his last outing.
Also working in the Angels favor is the fact that they face right-hander Jose Urquidy this evening. The Halos are currently hitting 40 points higher against the righties compared to the lefties.
The other underdog I’ve got my eye on tonight is the Marlins at Chase Field. Like Heaney, Trevor Rogers is a left-handed pitchy who’s not getting the credit he deserves. The difference is Heaney has been good; Rogers has been outstanding.

Wednesday will be the third home start for Zac Gallen in 2021. The D-Backs young righty is hoping to fare better than he did during the two previous instances. Gallen lasted just four innings in each of those starts – Arizona lost both of those games.
Best MLB Bets for Wednesday, May 12th
- Over 7.5 Runs – Reds vs. Pirates (+105)
- Braves over the Blue Jays (-106)
- White Sox to beat the Twins (-124)
Staying on theme with MLB picks that don’t require us to lay any juice, I dug into the Reds vs. Pirates NL Central battle taking place in the afternoon. The best places to bet baseball online installed the run total at 7.5 and are letting us grab the “over” in plus-money territory.
I suggest doing exactly that.
At least eight runs have been scored in five of Trevor Cahill’s six starts. The last time he faced the Reds lineup (4/6/21), Cincy exploded for 17 hits and 14 runs. Aside from that, just look at the betting data in 2021.
No pitcher wants to spend time on the injured list, but for Max Fried, it turns out his short stint on the IL was a blessing in disguise. Three rocky starts were enough for Fried to take a hard look at his mechanics, and that’s where the disconnect was discovered.
“I wasn’t crisp in my delivery, and I wasn’t as timed up.”
After coming to this realization, Max emerged from his extended break and looked sharp in his first game back. Most notably, his timing was synced up to his brilliant form in 2020.
That’s a long-winded way of saying that snagging the Braves at home at just -106 is one of my best MLB bets on Wednesday.
Last, but far from least, back the White Sox at home. Chicago is 9-4 as a favorite at Guaranteed Rate Field; the Twins are just 1-3 as a road underdog. Twins starter J.A. Happ needs to be commended for the way he’s been pitching, but he’s facing an uphill climb in tonight’s divisional matchup.
The Chi Sox are hitting a robust .295 against lefties this season and sport an MLB-best +53 run differential.
