Washington Football Team vs. Buffalo Bills – NFL, Week 3 (2021)

| September 22, 2021 6:39 am PDT

It wasn’t Josh Allen’s most glamorous performance, but the Bills got back on track in week 2 with a dominating victory in Miami. Meanwhile, Taylor Heinicke was fantastic on Thursday night, leading The Football Team to a last-second win at home versus the Giants.

This leaves us with a couple of 1-1 teams searching for victory #2 on Sunday.

Let’s break down the action starting with a look at the odds. I’ll work my way toward a Washington vs. Bills betting pick.

Washington vs. Bills Odds

Washington (+10)-130
Buffalo (-10)+110
Washington to Win+320
Buffalo to Win-400
Over 45.5-110
Under 45.5-110

You can spot discrepancies for NFL odds at the best football betting apps; however, they’re generally slight. Maybe a half-point here and there with subtle differences within the juice.

This isn’t the case with this particular matchup.

The Bills are laying 8.5 (-110) and BetOnline. Buffalo is laying 10 (+110) over at BetUS.

These figures are likely to change as we inch closer to Sunday’s kickoff. If either one catches your attention, I suggest locking it in sooner rather than later.

Washington Football Team Preview

Dare I say that Taylor Heinicke is an upgrade over Ryan Fitzpatrick? Perhaps it’s too early to tell, but Heinicke showed a lot of moxie in a primetime spot last Thursday. The product of Old Dominium has been lauded by teammates throughout this entire process, and it’s clear that Ron Rivera has been reading in between the lines.

“He has a little swagger to him, and his teammates feed off him. When you watch the way those guys do feed off of him, it is pretty impressive.”

That’s sincere praises for anyone, let alone an undrafted and undersized 28-year-old journeyman.

Set to face an aggressive-minded defensive attack in week 3, look for Heinicke to continue peppering Terry McLaurin. “Scary Terry” hauled in 11 of 14 targets for 107 yards and a touchdown in week 2 – a week after he secured what could go down as the NFL catch of the year.

Fantasy owners hoping to unleash Antonio Gibson with confidence—proceed with caution. I’m not suggesting you bench Gibson; just be aware that Buffalo is surrendering a measly 73.0 rushing yards per game.

Buffalo Bills Preview

After getting exposed in week 1 versus a feisty Steelers squad, the Bills bludgeoned a divisional opponent on the road. It’s all hunky-dory in Buffalo, right?

Not so fast.

Josh Allen isn’t in sync with his offensive lineman, as evidenced by the numbers.

Allen has a bottom-five grade from the clean pocket and against the blitz through the first two weeks of the season, per PFF.

Also worth noting – Buffalo’s pass-blocking grade in week 2 was 31st in the league.

It’s hard to gain a ton of insight out of the Bills, given how atrocious Miami played, but holding the Phins to 3.1 yards per play is impressive, nonetheless. Unfortunately, Buffalo churned out just 4.9 yards per play and committed two turnovers.

Sean McDermott’s got a lot to clean up before a hungry Washington team arrives.

Washington vs. Bills Prediction

Not taking the spread into account, my Washington vs. Bills pick is that Buffalo wins this game. The Bills are tough to play anywhere, but they’re especially tough in their own building. Case in point – Buffalo went 9-1 at Highmark Stadium last season (including the playoffs). Their lone loss came at the hands of the Chiefs.

Playing at home, the Bills should be able to slide past Washington on Sunday.

After getting upended at home against Pittsburgh in week 1, Buffalo players will want to give Bills Mafia plenty to cheer about on Sunday.

Washington Football Team vs. Buffalo Bills Betting Pick

My Washington vs. Bills prediction is that Buffalo wins this game. What I really think happens is the Bills just barely survive.

Washington has played 14 straight games without losing by more than eight points. That includes losing to Tampa Bay in the postseason; that includes playing with the likes of Dwayne Haskins under center.

The Football Team presents a mean pass rush that can get after Josh Allen, and play in the secondary is more than adequate. The connection between Heinicke and McLaurin is palpable.

Knowing the line is down to 8.5 points at lots of the top betting sites, latching onto WFT at +10 represents a whole bunch of value.
