Wales vs. Switzerland – European Championship, June 12, 2021

| June 11, 2021 5:22 am PDT

Switzerland heads into Euro 2020 in a rich vein of form. Vladimir Petkovic’s men have won each of their last six games and crushed Liechtenstein 7-0 in their most recent encounter.

On the flip side, Wales recorded a goalless draw with Albania in their previous match. The Dragons are arguably the weakest team in Group A, which also features Italy and Turkey.

The two nations kick off their European Championship campaigns in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Saturday, June 12.

Below, I discuss the odds for Saturday’s clash before analyzing the teams. After that, I share my prediction and betting pick for Wales vs. Switzerland.

Wales vs. Switzerland Odds

Wales to Win3.80
The Draw3.00
Switzerland to Win2.15

As expected, Switzerland (2.15) is the bookmakers’ favorite to claim all three points on Saturday. The Red Crosses are enjoying a tasty winning streak at the moment and carry plenty of momentum into the tournament.

All the top online sportsbooks view Wales (3.80) as the underdog here. The Welsh have the players to upset the Euro 2020 odds, but they will need to produce a solid team performance to get anything from their tournament opener.

Wales Team News and Analysis

It’s fair to say that Wales’ Euro 2020 preparations have been far from ideal. With manager Ryan Giggs suspended by the Football Association of Wales (FAW), caretaker boss Rob Page will lead the team into the competition.

Under Chris Coleman, the Dragons stunned everyone by reaching the semi-finals at the 2016 European Championship. However, it feels as though it will be impossible to emulate that feat this time around.

Wales picked up a couple of 1-0 wins back in March, beating Mexico in a friendly before edging out the Czech Republic in a World Cup qualifier. But since then, they have failed to register a victory.

In fairness, nobody expected Page’s men to trouble France at the beginning of the month. As it turned out, they ended up losing 3-0 to the reigning world champions, finishing the game with just 24% possession.

Despite the best efforts of Gareth Bale, the Dragons were held to a goalless draw by Albania last weekend – underlining the team’s bluntness in the attack.

Assessing Switzerland’s Chances

In my eyes, Switzerland is a genuine dark horse. Petkovic’s squad is stacked with EPL, Bundesliga, Serie A stars, and multiple Swiss-based players.

Four Borussia Monchengladbach players have made the cut, including goalkeeper Yann Sommer and forward Breel Embolo. The likes of Xherdan Shaqiri (Liverpool), Granit Xhaka (Arsenal), and Remo Freuler (Atalanta) will also cause opponents plenty of problems.

Benfica striker Haris Seferovic is arguably Switzerland’s biggest threat, though. The 29-year-old bagged 26 goals and seven assists last season and finished second in the Liga NOS Golden Boot charts.

Not only have the Red Crosses won each of their last six matches, but they have also netted tons of goals along the way. Indeed, they scored 19 goals in that time – averaging just over three goals per game.

Having beaten Euro 2020-bound Finland, a much-improved USA team, and lowly Liechtenstein recently, the Swiss look set to make an impact this summer.

My Wales vs. Switzerland Prediction and Pick

  • Switzerland to Win

Opening matches at major tournaments are always relatively cagey affairs, as teams are desperate to get off to a good start and lay down a marker. That said, Switzerland has more than enough quality to break Wales down.

Heavily reliant on Bale, the Welsh are likely to struggle to deal with Petkovic’s well-organized outfit. I’m backing the Red Crosses to kick off their Euro 2020 with a win.
