Villarreal vs. Valencia – LaLiga, October 18, 2020
Villarreal is playing well at the start of the new LaLiga season as they collected eight points after the opening five rounds. They bounced back from a massive 4-0 loss to Barcelona with a 3-1 win over Alaves at home, while the Yellow Submarine held Atletico Madrid to a scoreless stalemate on the road in the most recent match. At the moment, they are in the 4th place with two points behind the leaders Real Madrid.
Valencia, on the other side, opened this campaign in a hot and cold form as they recorded two wins, two losses, and a draw thus far. A quite unpredictable team this term, the Bats returned home with a 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad but then lost to Betis at Mestalla. They are in the 8th position with seven points, one behind Villarreal.

Villarreal Team News and Stats
Villarreal experienced a decent start to the new LaLiga season (W2, D2, L1) and subsequently enter this match as favorites. That’s a tag they should be comfortable with given they’re without a loss in 80.77% of the league games they’ve entered as favorites since the beginning of last campaign (W15, D6, L5).
Yet, while the hosts remain unbeaten at Estadio de la Ceramica (W2, D1), only one of their five LaLiga matches this season (home/away) actually saw the Yellow Submarine score the opening goal. That’s not impacted well on their numbers in the attack, with their tally of six goals scored at the moment (1.2 on average) their second-lowest tally after five league rounds in the last decade.
Unai Emery will be without Sofian Chakla (illness), Pervis Estupinan (muscle), Ramiro Guerra (knee), Alberto Moreno (knee), and Gerard Moreno (muscle), while Francis Coquelin (muscle) is questionable to face Valencia on Sunday.
Valencia Team News and Stats
Valencia began the campaign in a mid-table form (W2, D1, L2), but with goals in both halves in four of those matches, and the opener scored in the first 20 minutes in three, their games have surely been interesting to watch. In fact, there could be more of the same here, considering four of the previous five competitive H2H duels saw the opening goal scored in the first 15 minutes – three times by the Bats.
That being said, three of Valencia’s last four road LaLiga matches finished via a 1-0 result either way (W1, L2). However, their 1-0 win in their last road trip did halt their worst league winless away run since December 2012, but worryingly, the visitors have still bagged over 1.5 team goals in only one of their previous 13 LaLiga away games.
Javier Gracia has almost all of the players at his disposal but will wait on the fitness of Geoffrey Kondogbia (muscle) and Eliaquim Mangala (muscle), who are questionable to feature in this game.
Villarreal vs. Valencia Pick
When these two rivals meet, they usually don’t play draws, which was the case in nine of the previous ten H2H encounters, so don’t expect a stalemate in this one. It seems that they draw an H2H game every three years, and considering the previous one was in 2018, there will be no such outcome on Sunday.
Prior to the win over Sociedad, Valencia’s previous road victory in LaLiga was in December 2019, and they recorded nine losses and three draws in 12 winless road games between those two matches. Villarreal is playing very well at home, and I am going with the Yellow Submarine in this clash. They won two of the last three H2Hs (D1) at the Estadio de la Ceramica.
