Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Real Salt Lake – MLS, October 10, 2020

| October 8, 2020 7:15 am PDT

Two of the Western Conference’s strugglers go head-to-head on Saturday, October 10, with second-bottom Vancouver facing third-bottom Real Salt Lake.

The Whitecaps suffered a fourth straight defeat on Wednesday, going down 3-0 to San Jose Earthquakes. Meanwhile, RSL’s winless run was extended to three games in midweek following a 2-1 loss to Seattle Sounders.

If you’re interested in betting on this bottom-of-the-table matchup, I assess the bookies’ odds before sharing my Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Real Salt Lake prediction and betting pick below.

Latest Betting Odds

Vancouver Whitecaps to Win 3.70
The Draw 3.70
Real Salt Lake to Win 1.90

As you can see, the odds for the Vancouver win and the draw are identical for this game. 10bet views Real Salt Lake as the favorite, but in reality, both sides have been very poor of late.

There is no home advantage to take into account on Saturday, with the teams meeting at Portland’s Providence Park. RSL definitely boasts a stronger squad than Vancouver, so Freddy Juarez’s side should come out on top at a neutral venue.

Match Preview

Funnily enough, the Whitecaps’ last victory came against Real Salt Lake back in mid-September. Since then, four straight defeats have seen the Canadians plummet down the Western Conference.

To say that Vancouver has failed to put up a fight in recent weeks would be an understatement. Marc Dos Santos’ men have conceded 13 goals across their previous four outings, and they have only scored one in reply.

The Caps’ dismal run started with a 6-0 thrashing at the hands of LAFC, with defeats to Portland Timbers (1-0), Seattle Sounders (3-1), and San Jose Earthquakes (3-0) following. San Jose is by no means the strongest team in the division, but Vancouver was completely outclassed by the Quakes on Wednesday.

In fairness, things haven’t been going much better for RSL lately. Following the previous defeat to Vancouver, the Claret & Cobalt bounced back with a victory over LA Galaxy. But the Utah team has only managed to pick up one point from a possible nine since then.

After drawing with Minnesota United at the end of September, RSL started October with a 3-1 loss to LAFC. Juarez’s men showed a bit more spirit against Seattle in midweek, but they were unable to prevent a 2-1 defeat against the conference leader.

Still, let’s not forget that RSL finished third in the Western Conference last year and sixth in the overall standings. It goes without saying that the team needs a spark. But I’m sure it won’t be long before Juarez’s side is winning games again on a regular basis.

Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Real Salt Lake Pick

  • Real Salt Lake to Win

Both Vancouver and Real Salt Lake have struggled for consistency throughout 2020, but there is no denying that RSL is better than their recent results suggest. On the other hand, I’m not overly surprised to see the Caps – who finished second from bottom in last year’s Supporters’ Shield standings – in the position they are in.

This is bound to be a tight and cagey affair, with both teams desperate to avoid defeat. However, I’m confident that RSL’s quality will shine through on Saturday.
