Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Portland Timbers – MLS, September 10, 2021

| September 8, 2021 6:22 am PDT

The next edition of the Cascadia Cup takes place this Friday, September 10, as the Vancouver Whitecaps host the Portland Timbers at BC Place.

The two rivals are currently separated by just a single point in the Western Conference, with eighth-place Vancouver trailing sixth-place Portland. However, the Whitecaps are enjoying a remarkable unbeaten run at the moment.

The Canadians haven’t lost any of their previous ten MLS matches, picking up five wins and five draws in the process. Having seen off Austin FC last weekend, they head into Friday’s clash on a four-game winning streak.

Can the Timbers end Vancouver’s hot streak? Or will the Caps extend their run? I answer those questions – and more – in this Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Portland Timbers betting preview.

Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Portland Timbers Odds

Vancouver Whitecaps to Win2.10
The Draw3.60
Portland Timbers to Win3.60
Both Teams to Score1.60
Over 2.5 Goals1.80
Over 3.5 Goals2.75

There is value everywhere you look here. Of course, Vancouver (2.10) is the deserved favorite to win this one. But let’s not forget that Portland (3.60) has also won each of their last two matches.

On the opening weekend of the 2021 MLS season, the Caps claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over the Timbers. If their recent scoring exploits are anything to go by, we should see more goals this time around.

Anyway, that’s what the MLS betting sites make of this matchup. Before we settle on a prediction and pick for Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Portland Timbers, let’s take a closer look at the teams.

Vancouver vs. Portland – Match Preview

When the Whitecaps lost seven of their first 12 MLS matches this year, picking up just two wins along the way, I feared the worst for them. However, they have turned their season around in style.

The Canadians have only lost one of their previous 13 games and head into Friday’s clash on a ten-game unbeaten streak. On top of that, they have won each of their last four outings – scoring over 1.5 goals on every occasion during that period.

Brian White has suddenly come to life, bagging three goals in his past four appearances. Ryan Gauld has also been hugely impressive of late, notching two goals and two assists in his previous four outings.

Across the past five games, no team in Major League Soccer has picked up more points than Vancouver (13). Better still, only one side in the West – Colorado – has claimed more points across the previous ten matches (20).

Granted, the Caps have only kept one clean sheet in their last eight encounters. But they keep managing to outscore their opponents – and that can only be a good thing.

Just like Vancouver, Portland made a shaky start to the 2021 MLS season. However, they have enjoyed an upturn of their own recently – lost just two of their previous seven games.

The Timbers claimed a hugely impressive 2-0 victory over high-flying Seattle last week, Sebastian Blanco and Felipe Mora grabbing the goals. Last time out, Mora found the back of the net again as Portland secured their second straight 2-0 win.

Just one team in the West – Austin – has suffered more defeats than Giovanni Savarese’s men (10). Still, they have picked up two more wins than Vancouver, having only registered three draws this year.

It is also worth noting that Portland has the worst defensive record in the conference. With a whopping 39 in the goals against column, the Timbers have conceded at a rate of almost 1.8 goals per game in 2021.

It goes without saying that Vancouver’s in-form forwards will be licking their lips at the prospect of exploiting Portland’s leaky backline.

Whitecaps vs. Timbers Prediction and Pick

  • Over 2.5 Goals

Vancouver and Portland have played a combined total of 44 MLS matches this season. Remarkably, 29 of those have produced over 2.5 goals (66%). Both sides have been involved in numerous high-scoring games of late, so I can see Friday’s clash dishing up plenty of goals.

Although the Whitecaps have won each of their last four outings, it is important to remember that Savarese’s side is also enjoying a winning streak of their own.

While the tasty price for the home win is tempting, I think the over 2.5 goals market offers the best value here.
