Utah Jazz vs. Houston Rockets – NBA, Thursday, October 28, 2021

| October 28, 2021 10:50 am PDT

Utah strolls into Houston on Thursday night aiming for a 4-0 start. The Rockets are seeking their second victory of the season after dropping an in-state clash to the Mavericks Tuesday in Dallas. This Western Conference clash tips off at 8:00 pm ET at the Toyota Center.

For a preview of the matchup and a Jazz vs. Rockets prediction, continue reading along.

Jazz vs Rockets Odds on 10/28/21

Jazz (-9)-115
Rockets (+9)-105
Jazz to Win-420
Rockets to Win+340
Over 223.5-110
Under 223.5-110

Utah continues to serve as one of the top teams in the league against the spread. After finishing with the third-best cover rate in the entire league a season ago (57.3%), the Jazz are off to a 3-0 ATS start in 2021-22.

Flip the coin and the Rockets rank second-to-last in covering the spread since Stephen Silas took over (2020). Houston’s just 29-47 (38.2%) ATS during that stretch.

Keep in mind, Houston has lost back-to-back games by double digits and Utah’s average margin of victory is 14 ppg.

Previewing the Jazz

After returning the entire core that led them to the best regular-season record, it’s no surprise that Utah has blown by each of their first three opponents. Quin Snyder is getting balanced scoring as five different Jazz players currently average at least 14 ppg.

Mike Conley is healthy and Donovan Mitchell looks determined, but let’s stop for a second and admire the numbers that Rudy Gobert is putting up. From a walking double-double to a genuine 20-20 threat on a nightly basis, the 3x DPOY has been dominating in the paint.

Rudy Gobert Stats – Video-Game-Like Numbers in 2021
Date Opponent Points Rebounds FG %
10/20/21 Thunder 16 21 66.7
10/22/21 Kings 17 20 57.1
10/26/21 Nuggets 23 16 87.5

Butter my butt and call me a biscuit – the Frenchman is averaging 19/19 on north of 70% shooting.

To make matters worse for the Rockets, the Jazz rank first in the NBA in opponent three-point field goals made per game and are one of five clubs surrendering fewer than 100 points per contest.

Previewing the Rockets

Guided by a 19- and 21-year-old in the backcourt, most assumed there would be growing pains early on in Space City. Right on cue, Houston clocks in dead-last in turnovers per game (19.0) and is 1-3. The Rockets only win came against the lowly Thunder – they’ve lost their other three games by a combined 38 points.

While not much is expected from Stephen Silas’ bunch during what’s being deemed a year dedicated to a full-on rebuild, there are some bright spots the squad can build from. Both Jalen Green and Kevin Porter Jr. have flashed their insatiable motors and Christian Wood’s developing into one of the best all-around bigs in the game.

The Rockets rank 2nd in the NBA three-point % (40.8%) and 5th in steals per game (9.8).

Jazz vs. Rockets Pick

My Jazz vs. Rockets prediction is that Utah cruises to a 4-0 start. Having said that, the backdoor cover at home seems like a genuine possibility for the Rockets. Hence, instead of siding with either team, I’m banking on a bunch of points being scored.

I’m taking the over. The Rockets aren’t disciplined on D and the Jazz offense is hitting its stride.

Denver ranks 27th in possessions per game and yet we still saw 232 points scored on Tuesday in a game between the Jazz and Nuggets. Enter the Rockets, ranked 13th in possessions per game, who are yielding 115.7 points per game to teams not from Oklahoma City.

Yeah, I’ll take the over. Head to one of the best NBA betting apps and you can do the same.
