USA vs. Honduras – FIFA World Cup Qualifier, Wednesday, February 2, 2022

On Wednesday night, the USMNT will be hoping to bounce straight back from Sunday’s disappointing defeat to Canada. Next up, Honduras visits Minnesota United’s Allianz Field.
The good news for Gregg Berhalter’s boys is that Los Catrachos find themselves rock bottom of the eight-team WCQ group without a single win to their name. At the opposite end of the standings, the Yanks sit second – 15 points ahead of the Hondurans.
Will the USMNT return to winnings ways on Wednesday? Or could Honduras upset the odds? Read on to discover my USA vs. Honduras prediction and betting pick.
USA vs. Honduras Betting Odds
Regardless of Sunday’s loss, the USMNT (1.20) is the bookmakers’ out-and-out favorite to win Wednesday’s clash. That means Honduras (14.00) heads to Minnesota as the rank outsider. I mean, even the price (5.50) for the draw is huge.
I have included a handicap option here, simply because the price for the USA win is extremely low. On the face of it, backing the Stars and Stripes to win by two clear goals feels like a smart move.
USA vs. Honduras Head-to-Head
- USA Wins: 19
- Draws: 5
- Honduras: 3
The USA and Honduras first clashed all the way back in 1965. The nations have met on 27 occasions over the years, with the Hondurans picking up just three wins along the way.
La Bicolor’s last victory in this fixture came back in 2013. The Yanks have pieced together an eight-game unbeaten streak since then, registering six wins and two draws. When they met last September, the USMNT thrashed Honduras 4-1.
It is also worth noting that the USMNT has scored over 1.5 goals in four of the previous seven meetings between the sides. That statistic makes the handicap market even more attractive.
USA Team News and Analysis
Despite enjoying 64% possession and racking up 13 shots on Sunday, Berhalter’s boys were beaten 2-0 in Canada. That means the gap between the two frontrunners stands at four points, with the Canadians leading the way.
Still, the USA remains in a strong position. With three automatic qualification spots up for grabs – and a play-off place for the team that finishes fourth – the Stars and Stripes are on course to punch their ticket to Qatar 2022.
The hosts will be without injured duo Tyler Adams (hamstring) and Chris Richards (ankle) on Wednesday. Still, their roster is deep enough to cope without the Bundesliga-based pair.
Berhalter may be tempted to shake things up following the loss in Canada. Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic will almost certainly keep his place in the starting XI, but we could see the likes of Ricardo Pepi and Jesus Ferreira come into the line-up.
Honduras Team News and Analysis
It would be a massive understatement to say that Honduras is enduring a woeful WCQ campaign. I mean, Hernan Dario Gomez’s men have failed to win any of their ten matches – recording three draws and seven losses.
To make matters worse for the visitors, they head to Minnesota on a seven-game losing streak. They have already suffered defeats to Canada and El Salvador during this international break without scoring a goal.
Los Catrachos’ last victory came all the way back in July 2021. Since then, they have registered three draws and ten losses in all competitions – meaning they are currently enduring a 13-game winless run.
Fans of Major League Soccer will recognize CF Montreal’s Romell Quioto on Honduras’ team sheet. Other than Quioto, though, the visitors don’t pose much of a threat.
Prediction for USA vs. Honduras
Unfortunately for Honduras, the US will be desperate to return to winnings ways and get back on track in Minnesota. The hosts can’t afford another slip-up, meaning they will almost certainly punish the visitors.
I expect Berhalter’s boys to hit the ground running on Wednesday. The USMNT’s roster is stacked with top players, so they shouldn’t struggle to overcome a Honduras team made up of relative unknowns.
Not only have the Hondurans lost each of their last seven matches, but they have also failed to win any of their previous 13. Since the Yanks have lost just two of their past 20 outings, all the signs point towards an easy home win here.
My USA vs. Honduras Pick
-
USA (-1)1.75
If you’re looking for a safe bet, backing the US at 1.20 is the wager for you. But if you’re confident (like me) that the hosts will beat the visitors by two clear goals, I recommend opting for the handicap alternative.
