USA vs. Haiti – CONCACAF Gold Cup, July 11, 2021
The United States will aim to kick off their home Gold Cup tournament with a statement victory when Haiti visits Sporting KC’s Children’s Mercy Park on Sunday, July 11.
Alongside pre-tournament favorite Mexico, Greg Berhalter’s side is expected to make it all the way to next month’s final. As for the Haitians, they will just focus on getting out of Group B, which also features Canada and Martinique.
Can the States claim all three points on Sunday? Or will Haiti upset the CONCACAF Gold Cup odds?
In this USA vs. Haiti betting preview, I analyze the teams before providing my prediction and pick for Sunday’s showdown.
USA Team News and Analysis
The United States’ last defeat to a fellow CONCACAF nation came all the way back in October 2019. Since then, their only loss came in a friendly against Switzerland in May 2021.
After beating Trinidad and Tobago (7-0), Jamaica (4-1), and Northern Ireland (2-1) at the beginning of the year, the US overcame Honduras to book their spot in the inaugural CONCACAF Nations League final.
The rest, as they say, is history.
The Stars and Stripes sealed a landmark victory over Mexico in the Nations League final, beating their biggest rivals 3-2. They will now believe they can go all the way to the Gold Cup.
European-based stars like Christian Pulisic, Sergino Dest, Tyler Adams, Weston Mckennie, and Gio Reyna may not be part of the Gold Cup roster. But with MLS regulars such as Walker Zimmerman, Sebastian Lletget, and Gyasi Zardes on board, the US is destined to go far.
Assessing Haiti’s Prospects
If Haiti’s recent results are anything to go by, the USA can’t take the visitors lightly. In fact, Jean-Jacques Pierre’s men will be quietly confident of ruffling some feathers this summer.
Although the Haitians only recently booked their spot at the Gold Cup, they did it in style. After hammering Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 6-1 in their first prelim match, they crushed Bermuda 4-1 to punch their ticket to the main event.
Pierrot scored four goals across the recent qualifiers, including a hat-trick against Bermuda, while Nazon bagged a brace in this first game before adding another goal to his tally last time out.
When you look at the bigger picture, Pierre’s men have only lost two of their last eight outings (five wins, one draws). That said, they haven’t faced a team of the USA’s stature for a while.
Having lost back-to-back games against Canada in World Cup qualifying last month, Haiti is likely to struggle to compete with Berhalter’s boys.
USA vs. Haiti Odds, Prediction, and Pick
The leading online sportsbooks favor the US to win this one – and I totally agree with them. Sure, Haiti has picked up some positive results recently. But I can’t see Pierre’s side troubling the States in Kansas.
Odds of 1.23 for the USA win aren’t too bad, especially when you consider that Berhalter’s men are on home soil on Sunday. However, I’m going with the over 2.5 goals market for my USA vs. Haiti pick.
Let’s not forget that 12 of the States’ previous 15 games have produced over 2.5 goals, while the States have scored over 2.5 goals in nine of those matches.
