USA vs. Canada – CONCACAF Gold Cup, July 18, 2021

| July 17, 2021 3:36 am PDT

It’s the game that every North American soccer fan has been waiting for. Ever since the draw was made for the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup, USA vs. Canada has been hotly anticipated.

Having won both of their opening group matches, the two rivals have already booked their place in the quarter-finals. Still, you can bet your bottom dollar that both sides will do everything they can to win on Sunday, July 18.

You can find my USA vs. Canada prediction at the end of this piece, along with a couple of betting picks. But for now, let’s check out the odds for Sunday’s showdown before analyzing the teams.

USA vs. Canada Gold Cup Odds

USA to Win1.80
The Draw3.05
Canada to Win5.25
Both Teams to Score1.90
Over 2.5 Goals2.10
Under 2.5 Goals1.66

With the home-field advantage on their side, Gregg Berhalter’s boys are expected to claim all three points at Sporting Kansas City’s Children’s Mercy Park.

You would be foolish to write off Canada altogether, though. The Canucks have made an eye-catching start to the tournament and will be fired up for this encounter.

Anyway, that’s what the online sportsbooks think. Before we settle on a prediction for USA vs. Canada, we need to take a closer look at both sides.

USA Team News and Analysis

It’s safe to say the United States kicked off their 2021 Gold Cup campaign in a tentative fashion. They only managed to register a narrow 1-0 victory over Haiti, with Sam Vines scoring inside eight minutes.

However, the Stars and Stripes well and truly flexed their muscles in their previous game – crushing Martinique 6-1.

After starting Daryl Dike on the bench for the first match, Berhalter brought the highly-rated Orlando City striker into his starting XI last time out – and it paid off! Dike bagged a brace before the hour mark, while there were also goals for Miles Robinson, Gyasi Zardes, and Nicholas Gioacchini.

The USMNT heads now into Sunday’s clash on a five-game winning streak in all competitions. Better still, Berhalter’s men have suffered just one defeat in their last 15 outings.

Having netted 11 goals across their previous four competitive outings, the US will surely be confident of downing Canada.

Assessing Canada’s Chances

Incidentally, the Canucks are also enjoying a lengthy hot streak at the moment. Not only have they won each of their previous eight matches, but they have also lost just one of their last 11.

After thrashing Martinique 4-1 in their tournament opener, John Herdman’s men beat Haiti by the same scoreline last time out. Stephen Eustaquio found the back of the net in both games, while Cyle Larin added to his goal against Martinique with a double against Haiti.

Regardless, the head-to-head record between the USA and Canada makes for grim reading for Les Rouges.

The two sides have faced each other 19 times since 1985, and the Canadians have only managed to pick up one victory in that time.

Although there is no denying that Canada’s performances have improved in recent years, Herdman’s are still miles behind their southern neighbors.

Score Prediction for USA vs. Canada

The US hammered Canada 4-1 when the teams last met back in November 2019. Of course, a lot has changed since then. But I still expect the States to claim a relatively comfortable win on Sunday.

Having assessed both sides, I’m going with a 3-1 home win for my USA vs. Canada prediction. I can see the Canadians getting on the scoresheet, but the hosts should be too strong for the visitors.

USA vs. Canada Betting Picks

There is nothing complicated about my first USA vs. Canada betting pick. Considering you can almost double your money by backing the US to win, it makes perfect sense to side with the States here.

  • Pick: USA to Win – 1.80

The Canucks have scored over 3.5 goals in eight of their last 11 games, but they also conceded against both Martinique and Haiti. I’m confident they will find the back of the net on Sunday, but they are bound to conceded, too.

  • Bonus Pick: Both Team to Score – 1.90
