Uruguay vs. Paraguay- 2021 Copa America (June 28)
Near neighbors Uruguay and Paraguay face each other in the final group game in the Zona Sur on Monday and it is Oscar Tabarez’s side that is desperate for a win to avoid Brazil in the quarterfinals.
Paraguay has exceeded all expectations so far and could even finish top of the group with a win here and a shock defeat for Argentina at the hands of Bolivia. The Estadio Olimpico Nilton Santos in Rio is the setting for this clash and I will be taking a close look at both sides before making my Uruguay vs. Paraguay betting pick.
Will Uruguay Step Up a Gear at Copa America 2021?
Uruguay is generally thought of as the third best side in South America and has consistently overachieved for a country its size for around a century now. But this Copa America tournament is not going entirely to plan. A disappointing defeat to Argentina in the opening game was followed by a draw with Chile, before it finally picked up three points against bottom of the group Bolivia.
A win on Monday would catapult La Celeste into second place in the group and a much easier tie in the last eight than the game against Brazil that is currently in prospect. But for that to happen, Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani will have to be far less wasteful against Paraguay.
One bright spot has been the performances of midfielder Nahitan Nandez, who has looked very impressive in all three games so far and could well be earning a move away from Cagliari to a bigger club this summer.
Can Paraguay Keep This Form Up?
Paraguay has only won one game out of six in World Cup qualifying so far but has looked far better at this tournament. An expected victory over Bolivia in its opening game was followed by defeat to Argentina. But the 2-0 win against Chile on Thursday showed that maybe we should take its chance of going deep into this competition more seriously.
Angel Romero looked impressive against Bolivia but it was Miguel Almiron who starred last time out against Chile. He usually plays out wide for Newcastle United in the EPL but is employed as more of a striker for the national side – and it was he who converted the penalty that killed off La Roja in Brasilia.
It will be interesting to see whether either head coach decides to rest players before the quarterfinals. The turnaround in games will surely take its toll, but finishing as high up in the group is vitally important to any future success for both these teams. Paraguay will be wary of Uruguay’s twin terrors up front – but a win here could mean a more straightforward quarterfinal tie against Peru.
Latest Odds and My Uruguay vs. Paraguay Betting Pick
I am continually impressed by the way Uruguay churns out players that will do absolutely anything to ensure that their team wins. For a country of just over 3 million people, its level of success is incredible. MyBookie also believes that it can prevail here, making it the odds on favorite to turn this group phase performance into a positive.
Paraguay has not enjoyed anywhere near as much glory over the years but it is looking very good at this Copa America and will know that one more impressive performance could make all the difference for the knockout rounds.
Head coach Eduardo Berizzo has no new injury problems and may feel as though he has to field his strongest side here, even though there will be a few weary legs. Paraguay is the form side of the two at the moment and that could make for a very close game in Rio on Monday.
