Udinese vs. AS Roma Betting Preview – Serie A, October 3, 2020

Udinese is still looking for first points and first goal in the new Serie A campaign after a couple of disappointing defeats to Verona and Spezia. The latter one came at home to a newly-promoted side, and if Luca Gotti doesn’t change something quickly, he will be likely fired in the coming weeks.

Roma is also seeking the first win of the season, but unlike Udinese, who is still without a single point, Roma managed to get one in a 2-2 draw with the reigning champions Juventus at home last weekend. The Yellow and Reds are traditionally a better rival when it comes to H2H tilts at Dacia Arena (Friuli), so it’s no strange the visitors are the favorites here.

Udinese Team News and Stats

Udinese’s start to this Serie A season (L2) is their worst since the 2010/11 season when they suffered four defeats in the opening four matches. Both losses so far have been to nil and history is on the line as Udinese never started a Serie A campaign with three scoring blanks since the 1950s. Regardless, Udinese hasn’t seen a draw in their previous seven league matches (W3, L4), with six of those games being decided via a single-goal difference.

Following a loss in their Serie A home opener, Udinese now lost two straight home league games but hasn’t lost three straight since Sep/Nov 2018 (L4). Additionally, Udinese failed to score in five of their previous ten Serie A home matches, although three of those ended without goals.

Luca Gotti will be without Rolando Mandragora (knee) and Mato Jajalo (knee), while Jens Stryger Larsen (muscle) is questionable to feature on Saturday.

AS Roma Team News and Stats

Roma is yet to win in this season (D1, L1), and the 2011/12 Serie A campaign was the last time they didn’t record at least one victory before Round 3. Their one defeat, however, was awarded after Roma fielded an ineligible player against Verona in the opening match of the season, but that game aside, the visitors have seen over 2.5 goals in their last ten Serie A games (W7, D2, L1). Four of those eight-win/loss results finished with an identical 2-1 result, which was the case in 32.26% (ten) of their 31 Serie A results last term (draws excluded).

That defeat to Verona by default technically means Roma started their away campaign with a loss for the first time since 2010/11. Still, they finished the 2019/20 Serie A season on a run of four victories on the road, after scoring 3+ goals in each – which was the case in 47.37% (nine) of their 19 road matches last year.

Paulo Fonseca cannot count on Javier Pastore (hip), Nicolo Zaniolo (knee), and Diego Perotti.

My Udinese vs. AS Roma Pick

Roma won eight of the previous ten H2H encounters (L2), but Udinese was victorious in the most recent clash played in Rome last year. However, Roma has more than a positive record at Dacia Arena in recent years, having won six of the last seven visits here.

I am going with the betting trends and the fact that Udinese didn’t fire blanks in three consecutive games to start the season since the 1950s, and that’s why I am backing the hosts to find the back of the net on Saturday. Their defense is not playing well, and considering they allowed two goals to Spezia, I have no doubt Roma will get at least one. I am going with both teams to score.
