Turf Paradise Racing Picks – Tuesday, February 23, 2021

| February 22, 2021 12:52 pm PDT

The ten-race card for Turf Paradise Tuesday features mostly variations on the claiming race. I reviewed the three richest races and found sleepers, value show bets, and even an underdog amongst the contenders.

Remember, Turf Paradise is open to a limited number of spectators, so you can watch the Tuesday races under partly cloudy skies while enjoying temperatures in the low 80s and breezes around eight mph.

Read on for my Turf Paradise picks and betting tips for Tuesday, February 23, 2021.

Pick for Race 1 at Turf Paradise

This is an allowance race for three-year-olds running a distance of 6-1/2 furlongs for a purse of $25,000.

While this looks to be a tight race, my money is on the 5/2 morning line favorite here — Time for Gold, ridden by Javier Matias. This filly moneyed all three of her career starts, two of them wins: The Barbara Shinpoch Stakes (Black Type) last August and the Angie C. Stakes (Black Type) last July, both at Emerald Downs.

If you’re thinking about a value show bet, the longest odds in this race are 15/1, and I don’t see that entry finishing anywhere near the money, so let’s save ours.

  •  Win: Time for Gold 5/2

Picks for Race 4 at Turf Paradise

This is an allowance race for three-year-old fillies running a distance of 5-1/2 furlongs for a purse of $16,500.

I like the 3/1 morning line favorite for this race — Quatro, with Alfredo J. Juarez, Jr. in the irons. This filly moneyed thee of her five career starts, winning one.

And while I don’t see a long-odds entry worthy of a show ticket, I do see a potential sleeper: The 8/1 Yatahey, with Joree Scriver aboard. This filly moneyed both of her career starts, running a second in a trial at Wyoming Downs last July and then winning the Wyoming Downs Thoroughbred Futurity the following month.

  •  Win: Quatro 3/1
  •  Sleeper: Yatahey 8/1

Picks for Race 6 at Turf Paradise

This is an allowance optional claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward running a distance of 7-1/2 furlongs on turf for a purse of $17,000.

I’m betting on the second-favored (7/2) entry in this race — Tequila Mary, ridden by Keivan Serrano. This eight-year-old mare had 19 money finishes in 46 career starts and won 11 of them.

While the morning line favorite may have a more experienced jockey in the irons, I am not impressed with the favorite’s two wins out of 16 starts. I tend to favor horses likely to win when I pick winners. But maybe that’s just me.

And at 15/1, Lookout Taylor, with Adrian Flores aboard, looks like a good value show wager. This six-year-old mare finished 17 of her 31 career starts in the money, winning two.

  •  Win: Tequila Mary 7/2
  •  Show: Lookout Taylor 15/1
