Tuesday’s MLB Predictions and Betting Tips (May 18, 2021)

| May 18, 2021 6:33 am PDT

Now that the majority of the teams have played at least 40 games, we’re starting to get a clear indication of who’s for real and who’s not. The sample size grows on Tuesday with all 30 teams in action, and that means the betting opportunities are plentiful.

After a nine-game slate on Monday, the door swings wide open to lock in a number of MLB predictions on Tuesday.

I’ll pick a winner for every game before revealing my best MLB bets of the day.

MLB Game Winner Predictions for May 18th

  • Reds to beat the Giants
  • Phillies to beat the Marlins
  • Rays to beat the Orioles
  • Braves to beat the Mets
  • Blue Jays to beat the Red Sox
  • White Sox to beat the Twins
  • Cubs to beat the Nationals
  • Cardinals to beat the Pirates
  • Rangers to beat the Yankees
  • Brewers to beat the Royals
  • Indians to beat the Angels
  • Athletics to beat the Astros
  • Dodgers to beat the Diamondbacks
  • Padres to beat the Rockies
  • Mariners to beat the Tigers

I’m picking the Reds to handle the Giants at home but am certainly a bit hesitant. Luis Castillo’s ugly season reached a climax in his last outing when he surrendered 10 hits and 8 runs across 3.2 innings. On the flip side, Anthony DeSclafani is rocking a sturdy 2.14 ERA and a blistering 0.885 WHIP.

Having said that, the best baseball betting sites installed Cincy as a -120 favorite. When something seems too good to be true, in this case backing the Reds at +110, it’s typically because it is.

I’m staying away from this game and will be focusing my energy on five other spots. Including a couple of underdogs winning the game outright.

Top MLB Upset Picks for May 18th

  • Indians +128 (over the Angels)
  • Rangers +150 (over the Yankees)

Let’s start this off with a bang because it’s my favorite play among all of my MLB picks on Tuesday. When I spotted the Indians at +128 in Anaheim, I was a little bit miffed. Once I dove into the numbers, I continued to scratch my head.

The Halos own a disastrous -47 run differential; that’s 29th in the league in front of only the lowly Tigers. The Indians are sitting at +10. The standings portray Cleveland as a much better team as well.

Now let’s check in on the pitching matchup.

Andrew Heaney has allowed at least four runs in two of his last three starts. LA has lost each of the last four games he’s been the starter.

All Zach Pleasac has done is toss eight innings in back-to-back starts, including taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning last Thursday.

Pleasac has yielded a total of eight hits and two runs in his last three starts combined.

When the public zigs I like to zag, and that’s exactly what I’m doing here by picking the Rangers to upset the Yankees. What the casual fans likely don’t realize is that the Texas lineup has actually been more dependable than New York’s in 2021.

Rangers vs. Yankees Batters in 2021
  Batting Average Runs/Game Hits/Game Slugging %
Rangers .225 4.17 8.07 .392
Yankees .241 4.05 7.35 .385

Rangers starter Mike Foltynewicz hasn’t been great, but he has completed at least five innings in seven straight starts. Yankees hurler Jameson Taillon has failed to complete five innings in four of seven starts. Also working in Texas’ favor, the Rangers bats are healthy. While the Yanks lineup is dealing with a myriad of injuries.

Best MLB Bets for Tuesday, May 18th

  • Rays over the Orioles (-150)
  • Nationals over the Cubs (-112)
  • White Sox over the Twins (-109)

I’ve faded Matt Harvey in consecutive starts and have come out ahead; I see no reason to not go right back to the well. Instead of shining a light on all of the edges Tampa Bay holds, a quick glance at the betting data tells you everything you need to know.

The Orioles are 5-13 this season as a home underdog.

Look for Luis Patino to supply the Rays with four or five innings of shutdown baseball as Harvey struggles to get outs.

To say last week was a good week for Patrick Corbin might be the understatement of the century. After blitzing the Phillies lineup on Thursday, Patrick and his wife celebrated the birth their son, Weston, on Friday.

Perhaps the impending birth of his child is what spurred Corbin’s turnaround. Patrick’s ERA over his last three outings is 2.70; he’s issued zero walks in three of his last five starts.

The 31-year-old southpaw should be able to ride all of this momentum straight into Wrigley Field this evening.

Rounding out my best MLB picks on May 18th, latching onto the White Sox at -109 screams “bargain”.

The South Siders have won 69.2% (9-4) of their games as a road favorite. The Twins are just 7-13 at Target Field and are an MLB-worst 1-7 as an underdog. In other words, betting against Minnesota at home/when they’re playing a better team has been extremely profitable.

Cue in this matchup in Minnesota against the best team in baseball.

Chicago starter Lance Lynn has been wheeling and dealing (4-1, 1.30 ERA) sporting the highest SO9 (strikeouts per nine innings) of his career.
