Preview and Betting Picks for 2022 Tour of Flanders (Sunday, April 3)

| March 31, 2022 8:30 am PDT

First held in 1913, the Tour of Flanders is one of the most prestigious cycling races in the world. Known as De Ronde in Belgium, the one-day race is one of the five cycling monuments, as well as one of the Cobbled classics.

Such, the race tends to attract “crème de la crème” of pro cycling. However, even though many elite riders have tried themselves in this race, many found that cycling over cobblestone terrain can be super-challenging.

This explains why favorites often end up doing badly at Tour of Flanders. A piece of evidence is that the last year’s favorite Mathieu Van der Poel (4.50) finished behind Kasper Asgreen who was seen as one of the dark horses before the race. The odds on the Danish rider were 15.00.

Are we going to see an underdog triumph at the 2022 Tour of Flanders as well? If you’d like to see what I think, just keep on reading. I’ll now preview the race and present you with my top Tour of Flanders picks.

2022 Tour of Flanders Odds – Top 10 Favorites

Mathieu Van der Poel2.50

Victor Campenaerts29.00

The Tour of Flanders betting odds have changed quite a lot over the last couple of days. When Betway Sportsbook released its prices for the 2022 race, Wout Van Aert was seen as the #1 favorite at 4.50. Just behind him was Caleb Ewan with the odds of 5.00, followed by Tadej Pogacar with 6.50.

Mathieu van der Poel, who’s the current Tour de Flanders favorite, wasn’t even in the top 10 back when the odds were initially published.

Why Is Van Der Poel the New Favorite?

In 2020, Mathieu van der Poel won the Tour de Flanders, crossing the finish line before Wout van Aert. A year later, it was time for van der Poel to try and defend his title. Oddsmakers thought he was going to pull it off, but Kasper Asgreen had different plans.

The Danish rider beat the reining champ in a two-man sprint, finishing the 2021 race milliseconds before his rival.

Twelve months later, Van Der Poel is determined to get back the title. Knowing that he’s a classics specialist, it’s no surprise he’s seen as a top candidate to win the Tour of Flanders. The only problem is that the Dutchman has started the 2022 season later than other riders.

Still, despite making limited appearances this year, he seems to be in perfect shape. Evidence of this is that he’s won one classic race already in 2022. Actually, it happened only a few days ago, when he finished first at Dwars Door Vlaanderen.

The triumph on Wednesday is what’s probably made his Tour of Flanders odds shorten. After all, Dwars Door Vlaanderen is thought of as a dress rehearsal for De Ronde.

Is Wout van Aert Still a Good Bet?

The short answer is yes. The long answer is that the Belgian is an expert for riding over cobbled sections. He’s already won a cobbled classic this year – the 2022 E3 Harelbeke classic race.

A year before, he won the Gent–Wevelgem race. However, he’s still without a win in the Tour de Flanders. However, you can be certain that winning this race is on his to-do list.

There are several reasons for that, starting with the fact that the race is taking place in his homeland. Actually, van Aert’s hometown is Herentals, a city in Flanders.

2022 Tour of Flanders Prediction

  • Wout van Aert to Win

A few days ago, my colleague did a thorough Tour de Flanders preview, in which he predicted a win for van der Poel. I have to agree that the Dutch cyclist needs to be considered the favorite. However, I also have faith in van Aert.

My 2022 Tour of Flanders prediction is that one of those two will win the race. Still, I prefer the betting odds given on van Aert’s victory. Priced at 7.00, van Aert is a bet that’s definitely worth a try.

You can take the odds at Betway as I suggested earlier, or take a gander at different prices featured at the best cycling betting sites. You’re going to get a good price no matter who you go with this year, though.
