Tottenham Hotspur vs. LASK Betting Preview – Europa League, October 22, 2020

| October 20, 2020 9:34 am PDT

Just days after throwing away a seemingly unassailable 3-0 lead against West Ham in the EPL, Tottenham returns to action on Thursday, October 22, with a home Europa League tie against Austrian side LASK.

It’s fair to say that both these teams have made shaky starts to their domestic seasons, although Jose Mourinho’s Spurs are expected to kick off their Europa League campaign with a win.

Read on to see my Tottenham Hotspur vs. LASK prediction and betting pick.

Tottenham Hotspur vs. LASK Odds

Tottenham Hotspur to Win1.30
The Draw5.35
LASK to Win8.75

10bet hasn’t sprung any surprises with their odds for this game. Tottenham (1.30) is the clear home favorite on Thursday, but given Spurs’ iffy run of results, the high odds for the draw (5.35) and the away win (8.75) are bound to attract some attention.

I assess both sides’ chances below.

Team Assessments

Following a 6-1 thrashing of Manchester United, Tottenham appeared to be heading for their second straight EPL win on Sunday. Son Heung-min put Spurs ahead with less than 60 seconds on the clock, before Harry Kane bagged a brace inside 16 minutes.

However, a late collapse saw Mourinho’s men concede three goals, with Tottenham becoming the first team in Premier League history to avoid victory having been 3-0 up as late as the 81st minute.

Spurs find themselves seventh in the EPL table following a run of one defeat in five games, but if it wasn’t for Sunday’s capitulation, they would be third. Tottenham’s forwards are in red-hot form right now, yet their defense continues to let the team down.

Kane – 10 goals, 8 assists – and Son – 8 goals, 4 assists – have already racked up a combined total of 30 goal involvements in all competitions this season. But after nine games, Spurs are yet to keep a clean sheet.

LASK impressively beat Portuguese giant Sporting 4-1 in the Europa League play-offs at the beginning of November, although the Austrian side was beaten 3-0 by Rapid Vienna a few days later. Despite securing European soccer in style, the team’s domestic campaign is yet to get off the ground.

Dominik Thalhammer’s men are already five points behind Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga, with seven points from a possible 12 to their name. LASK heads into this game on the back of a 3-0 Austrian Cup victory over third-tier SV Worgl, but I don’t think you can read too much into that result.

Andreas Gruber got on the scoresheet again last time out, taking his tally for the season to five goals and three assists in eight games in all competitions. The winger is clearly enjoying life in Linz following his summer transfer from Mattersburg.

Spurs vs. LASK Betting Pick

  • Tottenham Hotspur to Win

Mourinho would have been fuming after watching his side concede three late goals last weekend, so I’m expecting a big response from Tottenham on Thursday. The Portuguese manager is a master of winning trophies, so he is likely to field a strong line-up in the Europa League this season.

Having come off the bench to make his comeback for Tottenham on Sunday, Gareth Bale is now in contention for a place in Mourinho’s starting XI. With Kane and Son firing on all cylinders, LASK will surely struggle to contain Spurs’ forward line.
