Toronto FC vs. Orlando City – MLS, July 17, 2021

| July 15, 2021 7:20 am PDT

Toronto’s decision to part ways with Chris Armas had an immediate impact, as the Reds stunned everyone by beating conference-leading New England in their first game without the axed head coach.

Next up, TFC faces Orlando City at Exploria Stadium on Saturday, July 17, aiming to secure back-to-back wins for the very first time this year.

Second-place Orlando currently sits 13 points ahead of last-place Toronto in the Eastern Conference. But following a two-week lay-off, it feels like anything could happen in Florida.

Let’s jump straight into my Toronto FC vs. Orlando City betting preview and take a closer look at the teams. After some analysis, I will discuss the odds for Saturday’s clash before sharing my prediction and pick.

Toronto Team News and Analysis

Unfortunately, things didn’t work out for Armas in Toronto. After managing to pick up just a single win from his first 11 MLS games as TFC head coach, the former Red Bulls boss was shown the exit door.

The Reds headed into their previous encounter on a run of six straight losses, with a 7-1 thrashing to DC United proving to be Armas’ final match in charge. However, they flexed their muscles against the Revs and beat the conference leaders 3-2.

Quick-fire goals from Yeferson Soteldo, Kemar Lawrence, and Tsubasa Endoh saw the Canadians race into a 3-0 lead inside 24 minutes. Although they conceded twice after the break, they managed to hold on a claim a precious win.

There is no hiding from the fact that TFC still sits at rock bottom of the Eastern Conference, though. After all, they have conceded an unforgivable 29 goals in 12 league matches this year – letting in an average of 2.4 goals per game.

On a brighter note, interim coach Javier Perez looks set to restore Jozy Altidore to the first team following a prolonged freeze-out.

Assessing Orlando’s Recent Form

Having lost just one of their opening ten MLS games this season (six wins, three draws), the Lions looked like genuine Supporters’ Shield contenders. But back-to-back defeats have taken the shine off an impressive start to the 2021 campaign.

Although Orlando was beaten 2-1 by the Red Bulls before suffering a shock 3-1 defeat to struggling Chicago Fire, the club remains in a strong position.

Oscar Pareja’s men have a game in hand over both first-place New England and third-place Philadelphia. With a superior goal difference and a three-point gap between them and the Revs, they could find themselves atop the standings come the end of the weekend.

Not only are the Lions the second-highest scorers in the East, but they also boast one of the tightest defenses in the division. With 20 goals scored and only 12 conceded, they will fancy their chance of returning to winning ways on Saturday.

The recent arrival of Argentine left-back Emmanuel Mas is only going to strengthen Orlando’s backline.

Toronto vs. Orlando Odds, Prediction, and Pick

Toronto FC to Win2.60
The Draw3.80
Orlando City to Win2.35
Both Teams to Score1.48
Over 2.5 Goals1.55
Over 3.5 Goals2.35

It is not uncommon to see a club ditch its head coach and then win the very next game. That’s exactly what happened for Toronto earlier in the month, as the team played with freedom to see off New England.

However, I expect Orlando to claim all three points this weekend. I mean, the Lions have only lost three of their 12 outings this term, while TFC sits on a record of 2-2-8.

  • Pick: Orlando City to Win (2.35)

Toronto’s previous two games have produced a combined total of 13 goals. That’s 6.5 goals per game! The Reds may have scored four times during that period, but they also conceded nine goals.

As for Pareja’s men, each of their last six matches has dished up over 2.5 goals, while three of their previous five outings have produced at least four goals.

Backing over 3.5 goals is a no-brainer here.

  • Bonus Pick: Over 3.5 Goals (2.35)
