Toronto FC vs. New York City – MLS, October 28, 2020
Toronto FC and New York City found themselves on opposite ends of big wins last weekend. The Reds suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat at the hands of Philadelphia Union, while the Boys in Blue secured a comfortable 3-1 victory over Montreal Impact.
The two sides clash at Rentschler Field on Wednesday, October 28, with second-place Toronto sitting 11 points ahead of fifth-place NYC in the Eastern Conference.
Can Ronney Deila’s side close the gap? I assess the bookies’ odds before sharing my Toronto FC vs. New York City prediction and betting pick.
Toronto FC vs. New York City Odds
The leading online soccer betting sites clearly think there is very little to separate Toronto FC (2.50) and New York city (2.65) at the moment.
The Reds’ thrashing at the weekend may have affected the bookies’ odds here, but it is important to remember that Greg Vanney’s men was enjoying a nine-game unbeaten streak (seven wins, two draws) before meeting Philly.
Toronto FC vs. New York City Preview
Wow! Nobody saw the result coming, did they?
Toronto’s seemingly unstoppable hot streak was ended in spectacular fashion as Philadelphia hammered the Reds 5-0 on Saturday. Vanney’s men managed just a single shot on target throughout the entire 90 minutes, while the U finished the game with 27 attempts (12 on target).
But all good things must come to an end, right?
Let’s not forget just how good the Canadians have been this year. The Ontario outfit has lost just three of their 20 regular-season games this term and still sits joint-top of the Eastern Conference – six points ahead of third-place Columbus Crew.
Toronto was the first club to secure a playoff berth this season and has arguably been the most consistent team in 2020. Write them off at your peril!
New York City dominated Montreal on Saturday, although Deila’s men didn’t break the deadlock until the 68th minute. Jesus Medina opened the scoring, before Maximiliano Moralez and Tony Rocha netted late one. A last-gasp Romell Quioto consolation goal made the scoreline look a little less emphatic.
Following a slow start to the 2020 campaign, it feels like NYC is going to finish in the top six after all. However, the Boys in Blue seems to struggle when it comes to seeing off the top teams in the division.
Deila’s side recently claimed comfortable victories over FC Cincinnati, Inter Miami, and DC United. But shortly after, a draw with Orlando City came in between defeats to New England Revolution and Columbus.
Unfortunately for NYC, Toronto is one of the strongest teams in the East.
Toronto FC vs. New York City Betting Pick
Toronto FC to Win2.50
It goes without saying that the Reds will be eager to put last weekend’s shock defeat behind them and return to winning ways at the first available opportunity.
New York City beat Toronto 3-1 at the MLS is Back Tournament, but a lot has changed since then. Vanney’s men got their revenge with a 1-0 victory at the end of September, and I can see them beating NYC again on Wednesday.
