Toronto FC vs. Nashville SC – MLS, August 1, 2021

| July 31, 2021 1:56 am PDT

Just over a month ago, Nashville came from behind to clinch a late 3-2 victory over Toronto at Nissan Stadium. This Sunday, August 1, TFC welcomes the Tennessee team to BMO Field.

The Reds have enjoyed an impressive turnaround since parting ways with Chris Armas, picking up two wins and two draws under the watch of interim head coach Javier Perez.

On the flip side, Gary Smith’s men have only lost one of their 15 MLS games this year. They head into Sunday’s clash on a seven-match unbeaten streak and sit second in the Eastern Conference – 13 points clear of eleventh-place Toronto.

I analyze the teams in this betting preview before discussing the odds for Sunday’s showdown. I then share my prediction and pick for Toronto FC vs. Nashville SC.

Toronto Has Made Vast Improvements

When Toronto’s losing streak was extended to six games with an unforgiveable 7-1 defeat to DC United, it was clear that Armas had to go. The former Red Bulls coach only managed to win one of his 11 MLS games in charge of TFC, chalking up eight losses in the process.

Four days after Armas’ departure, the Ontario outfit secured a much-improved 3-2 victory over high-flying New England before record back-to-back draws with Orlando and RBNY. They then extended their unbeaten run to four games with a 2-1 win over Chicago last weekend.

The reintroduction of veteran striker Jozy Altidore has clearly given the team a huge boost, while Venezuelan winger Yeferson Soteldo has upped his game in recent weeks – bagging two goals and one assist across the past four outings.

The Canadians have much some obvious defensive improvements, too. Although they have conceded one goal in each of their previous three games, they are no longer throwing away two or three goals on a regular basis.

Nashville Has Only Lost Once All Year

On the other hand, Nashville kicked off the campaign with a seven-match unbeaten streak before suffering their only defeat of the season to the Red Bulls. Since that loss, they have managed to string together another seven-game unbeaten run.

Their first unbeaten streak only comprised two wins, with five draws coming along the way. But their current run is made up of four wins and three draws. Having made a strong start to the season, Smith’s side seems to be getting even stronger.

Not only are the Boys in Gold the third-highest scorers in the East, but they also boast the second-best defensive record in the conference.

Goalkeeper Joe Willis finds himself atop the clean sheet charts; as a result, boasting a shutout rate of 46.7%.

At the other end of the field, Hany Mukhtar (seven goals, four assists), CJ Sapong (five goals, three assists), and Randall Leal (three goals, three assists) have consistently chipped in with goal involvements throughout the campaign.

Due to their recent resurgence, the Reds head into Sunday’s clash as favorites. But as you can see, the price for the home win is notably high here.

Considering Smith’s men have only lost one of their 15 matches this season, the odds for the away win and the draw are seriously attractive. Still, it is worth remembering that Toronto is enjoying an unbeaten run of their own at the moment.

Having taken everything into consideration, I recommend looking at the goal-based markets here, as predicting the result of this matchup is pretty difficult.

In my eyes, backing under 2.5 goals makes a lot of sense. TFC has tightened things up in recent weeks, with two of their previous three outings producing less than three goals.

Let’s not forget that over half of Nashville’s matches this season have dished up under 2.5 goals, too.
