Torino vs. Cagliari – Serie A, October 18, 2020

Torino failed to get a single point from the opening two matches of the new Serie A season after losing to Fiorentina and Atalanta, but now they have a chance to finally get at least one when Cagliari comes to town.

Cagliari, on the other side, started the campaign with a point against Sassuolo, but suffered a couple of defeats to Lazio and Atalanta, allowing seven goals in the process. At the moment, Cagliari has the second-worst defense that conceded eight goals, only Crotone allowed more (10).

It’s been a weak start for Torino so far after losing their opening two Serie A games, and they’re now without a win in seven league matches (D3, L4). Three of those defeats saw Torino trail at halftime and allow in both halves, which also occurred in the previous H2H (4-2), although that was Torino’s only loss in their last 11 duels with Cagliari (W6, D4, L1).

Expect action here as five of Torino’s last six home games have produced goals at both sides (W2, D1, L3), five provided over 2.5 goals, and four saw the hosts score the opening goal. The latest H2Hs haven’t disappointed as well, with the last six held at Stadio Olimpico di Torino witnessing both teams score (W3, D3).

Marco Giampaolo will be without Daniele Baselli (knee), but the rest of the players are healthy and ready to face Cagliari on Sunday.   

Cagliari is not much better than Torino and won only one of their last 13 Serie A games (D5, L7). They trailed at halftime in six of the seven defeats in that span, mainly due to allowing the opener by the 11th minute in five of those six contests. However, omens appear better for the visitors when looking at the latest H2H encounters, as Cagliari scored the opening goal in three of the previous five games at this venue.

The visitors have lost eight of their previous 16 Serie A games on the road, though (W1, D7), allowing the opener in seven of those defeats. More importantly, Cagliari scored the opener in nine (47.37%) of their 19 Serie A away matches last year, but led at the break on just five occasions, and held onto that lead at full-time only twice.

Eusebio Di Francesco cannot count on Gaston Pereiro (foot) and Simone Pinna (knee).

Both sides failed to keep their net intact so far in the season, and considering that 11 of the previous 13 H2H meetings produced goals on each end, I am quite optimistic about goals on both sides here. Each of the last six H2H duels at Stadio Olimpico di Torino produced goals on both ends, and I have no doubt that will occur in this one as well.
