Welcome to my Round 17 AFL predictions and picks. The action gets underway on Thursday, July 7, so it’s time to start planning your AFL bets for the upcoming clashes.

Geelong vs. Melbourne headlines the Round 17 schedule, as the competition’s top two teams prepare to go head-to-head. Can the Demons hold onto first place? Or will the Cats overtake the defending premiers?

You can find my AFL predictions and picks for Round 17 below. First, we need to assess the Round 17 AFL betting odds – courtesy of 10bet.

AFL Odds for Round 17

  • Geelong (1.83) vs. Melbourne (1.90)
  • Sydney (1.60) vs. Western Bulldogs (2.25)
  • Collingwood (1.02) vs. North Melbourne (10.50)
  • Gold Coast (2.00) vs. Richmond (1.76)
  • St Kilda (1.86) vs. Fremantle (1.86)
  • Port Adelaide (1.38) vs. GWS Giants (2.90)
  • Brisbane (1.20) vs. Essendon (4.05)
  • Hawthorn (1.50) vs. Adelaide (2.50)
  • West Coast (2.90) vs. Carlton (1.38)

As you can see, the Cats are favored to beat Melbourne. But only just. Geelong is one of six home favorites, along with Sydney, Collingwood, Port Adelaide, Brisbane, and Hawthorn.

Richmond and Carlton are expected to win on the road in Round 17. Elsewhere, the AFL oddsmakers can’t seem to call the clash between St Kilda and Fremantle.

Round 17 AFL Predictions

Let’s dive into my AFL predictions for Round 17. What better way to start than with my Geelong vs. Melbourne prediction?

Geelong to Beat Melbourne

The Demons kicked off their campaign with a ten-game winning streak before suffering three straight losses. However, the reigning premiers appear to be heading in the right direction again following victories over Brisbane and Adelaide.

That said, Geelong is on fire right now. Having won each of their past six outings, the Cats find themselves just four points behind Melbourne. That’s why I’m backing them to beat the Dees on Thursday.

Sydney to Beat Western Bulldogs

It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Sydney and Western Bulldogs are among the comp’s most inconsistent teams at the moment. The Swans have registered nine wins and six losses this year, while the Dogs have recorded eight wins and seven draws.

Predicting the winner of this clash is no easy task, but someone’s got to do it, right? Since the Sydneysiders have picked up four wins across the past seven rounds, I can see them edging out the Bulldogs.

Collingwood to Beat North Melbourne

North Melbourne’s season went from bad to worse last weekend, as they suffered a humiliating 112-point thrashing at the hands of Geelong. Consequently, the Kangaroos head into Round 17 on a 13-game losing streak. They have managed to seal a solitary win in 2022!

By contrast,
Collingwood is on a six-game winning run. When you look at the bigger picture, the Magpies have won eight of their previous ten encounters. With stars like Jack Crisp, Brodie Grundy, and Nick Daicos in red-hot form, the Pies should make light work of lowly North.

Richmond to Beat Gold Coast

Richmond made a shaky start to the season, losing four of their opening six games. Since then, however, the victories have come at a rapid rate. Indeed, the Tigers have won seven of their last nine outings. They will surely be confident of dispatching Gold Coast.

Granted, the Suns have upped their game in recent months. But they enter Round 17 on the back of two straight losses. They look set to suffer a third successive defeat when they welcome in-form Richmond to Metricon Stadium on Saturday.

Fremantle to Beat St Kilda

A five-goal haul from Rory Lobb fired Fremantle to an impressive win over Port Adelaide last weekend. As a result, the Dockers have won four of their last five games – and ten of their previous 13 – while cementing their status as genuine flag contenders.

On the flip side, St Kilda is on a run of three losses in four games. Although the Saints ended a three-game losing streak with a win against Carlton last time out, they will struggle to deal with Freo’s free-flowing footy this weekend.

Port Adelaide to Beat GWS Giants

When Port Adelaide started the season with five straight losses, things looked bleak for Ken Hinkley’s side. But having won seven of their previous ten encounters, the South Australians will fancy their chances of beating Greater Western Sydney.

The Giants find themselves eight points behind Port on the AFL ladder after losing five of their past eight matches. The Sydneysiders have only managed to win five of their 15 clashes this year, so I can see them suffering another defeat against the Power.

Brisbane to Beat Essendon

While Melbourne sits atop the standings on 48 points, Brisbane is one of three teams on 44 points. The Lions crushed the Bulldogs by 41 points last weekend, meaning they have won 11 of their 15 games this year. Better still, they have booted more points than anyone else.

At the opposite end of the ladder, Essendon sits third from bottom – 28 points behind Brisbane. Having lost 11 of their 15 encounters in 2022, the Bombers are on course to register another loss at the hands of the free-scoring Lions.

Adelaide to Beat Hawthorn

In all honesty, it is difficult to predict the outcome of this matchup. Fourteenth-place Adelaide leads fifteenth-place Hawthorn by just four points, so this is destined to be a close-fought battle between two evenly matched teams.

That said, the Crows are in better form than Hawthorn right now. While the South Australians have won two of their last four games, the Hawks have lost each of their previous five. That’s why I’m backing Adelaide to edge this clash.

Carlton to Beat West Coast

The Eagles claimed only their second win of the season in Round 15, beating fellow strugglers Essendon. However, they swiftly returned to losing ways last time out – conceding 128 points in a heavy defeat against Richmond.

As for the Blues,
they have won ten of their 15 games in 2022. With Charlie Curnow kicking goals for fun this year, Carlton shouldn’t struggle to get the better of a West Coast team that has the worst defensive record in the competition.

Top AFL Picks for Round 17

Geelong vs. Melbourne – Geelong to Win1.83
Collingwood vs. North Melbourne – Collingwood (-57.5)1.86
Hawthorn vs. Adelaide – Adelaide to Win2.40
West Coast vs. Carlton – Carlton (-18.5)1.86

I’m backing the Cats to extend their six-game winning streak with a victory over Melbourne in Thursday’s top-two showdown. I can also see Adelaide overcoming Hawthorn, extending the Hawks’ losing run to six matches.

Elsewhere, I recommend exploring the handicap markets for Collingwood vs. North Melbourne and West Coast vs. Carlton. The Magpies and the Blues should win comfortably, so be sure to enhance the odds by utilizing the handicaps.
