THE PLAYERS Championship Picks in 2022 – PGA Tour Betting Predictions
It’s a big week for the PGA Tour, as the golfers will head to Ponte Vedra Beach, FL for THE PLAYERS Championship. It’s one of the most prestigious events on tour, often referred to as the fifth major.
TPC Sawgrass will host the event for the 41st time. Everyone knows the most famous aspect of the course is the iconic par-3 17th. The island green will test people’s patience, with only the best golfers succeeding.
Which golfer can pick up a big victory at TPC Sawgrass? Here are my favorite picks for the 2022 PLAYERS Championship.
Value Picks for THE PLAYERS Championship
Sungjae Im was in contention last week, but he didn’t pan out as a sleeper. Can a past champion recapture success at TPC Sawgrass?
Adam Scott (+5000)
It wasn’t the best start to the season for Adam Scott, but he is starting to build some momentum. He finished fourth in the Genesis Invitational and was in contention after the first round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
The 41-year-old made his first appearance in THE PLAYERS Championship in 2002. Two years later, he captured his second career PGA Tour victory. It’s nice to have a win under his belt, but I don’t value that much considering it came in 2004.
What I like about Scott is his recent success at TPC Sawgrass. He struggled last year, but check out his finishes from 2016 to 2019.
- 2016: -7 (12th)
- 2017: -5 (6th)
- 2018: -11 (11th)
- 2019: -11 (12th)
Scott has played consistently at TPC Sawgrass, but is he too consistent? From 2017 to 2019, he has never shot a round lower than 68. A “low” round could make the difference in earning his second victory in THE PLAYERS Championship.
This would only be his second victory in the last five years.
Si Woo Kim (+8000)
Si Woo Kim is having a very quiet season. The 26-year-old has five top 20 finishes in 12 starts. He only has one missed cut, coming in October. This week, Kim will aim to pick up his fourth career PGA Tour victory.
Kim showed up to TPC Sawgrass in 2016 and had immediate success. He finished 23rd, but his breakout performance came in 2017.
- First Round: 69 (-3)
- Second Round: 72 (E)
- Third Round: 68 (-4)
- Fourth Round: 69 (-3)
In a final round that saw many top contenders falter, Kim shot a three-under, 69 to win the 2017 PLAYERS Championship. At 21 years old, he became the youngest winner in tournament history.
He struggled at TPC Sawgrass in 2018 and 2019 but responded with a solid performance in 2021. Kim shot a five-under 67 in the third round to move into contention. He failed to mount a final-round charge, but an eight-under score earned him a ninth-place finish.
Kim has been trending in the right direction. Now, it’s time for him to close the deal.
Best PLAYERS Championship Betting Picks
I thought we had it with Rory McIlroy last week. He had a big first round but shot three straight rounds over par. My other pick, Matt Fitzpatrick, finished ninth. Who am I picking this week?
Justin Thomas (+1400)
We haven’t seen a ton of Justin Thomas this season, but he has been in contention in almost every start. He has four top 10 finishes in six starts, including his last two events. Could this be the week he picks up his first victory of the season?
Thomas looked like a strong contender in THE PLAYERS Championship in 2016. He went into the weekend at six-under, but a three-over, 75 doomed his chances. A final round 65 earned him a third-place finish.
Last year, Thomas finally avenged that loss.
- First Round: 71 (-1)
- Second Round: 71 (-1)
- Third Round: 64 (-8)
- Fourth Round: 68 (-4)
It wasn’t looking good for Thomas, as he trailed Lee Westwood by eight shots going into the weekend. That’s when Thomas went low, shooting 12-under on the weekend. Thomas won by one shot to score his 14th career PGA Tour victory.
Thomas hasn’t won since the tournament. He is way too good of a golfer to go a full year without winning. He should have a great chance to break the winless streak at TPC Sawgrass.
Viktor Hovland (+2000)
Viktor Hovland is having an unreal season. He picked up a pair of early-season victories on the PGA Tour and hasn’t slowed down. Including the European Tour, check out his last five finishes.
- Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship: -8 (4th)
- Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic: -12 (1st)
- WM Phoenix Open: MC
- Genesis Invitational: -14 (4th)
- Arnold Palmer Invitational: -4 (2nd)
He had a hiccup in the WM Phoenix Open, but he has been in contention to win every tournament. Hovland defeated Richard Bland in a playoff to win the 2022 Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic.
It looked like Hovland was on his way to winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Unfortunately, he shot five over on the weekend to lose by one stroke.
I’ll be honest, Hovland doesn’t have a good track record at TPC Sawgrass. They didn’t have THE PLAYERS Championship in 2020, so last year marked his first start. He shot two over, missing the cut.
Something tells me we’ll see a different outcome this year. He is playing with so much confidence, and I’m not sure if anything will slow him down.
Predicting Who Wins the 2022 PLAYERS Championship
This was a close battle between Justin Thomas and Viktor Hovland. Both players have been amazing this season, but I valued Thomas’ experience and success in THE PLAYERS Championship.
Thomas hasn’t won a tournament since last season. It’s about time he ends that streak. I’m okay with betting on Thomas or Hovland for the 2022 PLAYERS Championship. No matter who you bet on, make sure you use the top golf sportsbooks.
