Tampa Bay Downs Picks – Wednesday, January 20, 2021
Tampa Bay Downs continues its thoroughbred racing week with nine maiden and claiming matches scheduled for Wednesday. Local spectators can expect a great day at the races, with mild winds, highs in the low 70s, and mostly sunny skies.
Remember that while I review three of Tampa Bay Downs’ richest races here, you can find their full nine-race card for Wednesday — including entries, jockeys, morning-line odds, and wagering options — at one of our top horse racing betting sites.
Now, read on for my Tampa Bay Downs picks and tips for Wednesday, January 20, 2021.
Pick for Race 6 at Tampa Bay Downs
This is a maiden claiming race for three-year-old fillies running a distance of one mile on turf for a purse of $15,350.
I like the second-favored (7/2) entry in this race — Spin Class, ridden by Roberto Alvarado, Jr. This filly moneyed four of her five career starts with four second-place finishes.
There are plenty of longshots in this race, especially if the also-eligibles/MTO horses enter the starting gate, but frankly speaking, not a single one looks likely to finish in the money.
- Win: Spin Class 7/2
Pick for Race 8 at Tampa Bay Downs
This is a maiden special weight race for three-year-olds running a distance of one mile on turf for a purse 0f $22,500.
I’m sticking with the 5/2 morning line favorite for this race — Deferred Taxes, with Antonio A. Gallardo in the irons. This colt finished in the money one of his two career starts and has shown comparatively good performance in recent workouts.
I don’t see any long-odds sentries in this race with a real chance of finishing in the money, so save yours.
- Win: Deferred Taxes 5/2
Picks for Race 9 at Tampa Bay Downs
This is a claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward running a distance of one mile on turf for a purse of $18,100.
I’m backing the second-favored (4/1) entry in this race — Morgan’s Z Va, with Antonio A. Gallardo aboard. This six-year-old mare finished in the money 19 of her 37 career starts, winning nine.
At 10/1, Wanna Have Fun, ridden by Andres Ulloa, looks like a good contender for a value show bet here. This five-year-old mare finished in the money 14 of her 24 career starts, winning three of them.
- Win: Morgan’s Z Va 4/1
- Show: Wanna Have Fun 10/1
